Light / Proximity Sensor and auto screen off

Loving the phone, but super confused by the fact that screen does not turn off automatically when i make or receive phone calls and lift the phone to ear / face ?

If this expected behaviour on this device or is my device faulty ?

Hold the phone with the right hand.. Mine works fine.

Mine turns the screen off when held to your ear/face. Maybe you have a defective unit.

The proximity sensor is just to the right of the earpiece speaker if that's any help.

Ok, my bad seems like it's only an issue when you make phone calls via hangout dialler. First the screen goes blank and only bottom buttons litup. Then one needs to use the app switcher to select the app again and get information on screen. 

Once that is done and your voice call begins, it appears the hangout app does not detect the proximity sensor all together and a touch of your face can disconnect the call or launch anything else such as your notification bar.
