Battery life after Lollipop update

Now that the "dust has settled" on our two Hudl2s, I'm becoming quite impressed with the battery life since the update; particularly when idle...

That's a pretty impressive (roughly) only 5% drop off over the 10 or so hours between putting it down and picking it up again... I guess the power improvements in Lollipop, at least for the Hudl2 anyway, seem pretty real... Doing that previously without plugging it in would have flattened the battery, or nearly so, for sure...

I see wifi is on all the time! If you don't need this it can be set to never on during sleep in the advanced wifi settings

I understand the point you are making and already knew about this but, since I am a network and IT engineer (by profession) most of what I do and how I make use of my mobile devices relies on them being connected 24/7 for numerous reasons and so for me, this setting is irrelevant as it would prevent me from making "normal" (for me) use of my devices.

Besides, I demand good battery life from all my devices with wifi and bluetooth (in my phone's case) on at all times and if they can't manage that in a sensible fashion, then they get replaced by a device that can!

I agree with the OP. Battery life seems better. But only whilst in standby. Otherwise it slurps the juice as before.

Definitely an improvement.. I'm just a bit dismayed that the new 'Doze' feature is not included with Lollipop as it is in 6.0 Marshmallow. The new project Volta approach saves even more juice ( its claimed)

Haha I'm pushing it thinking we will ever get Marshmallow though!

Cheers

I went to bed the other evening and my battery was at 90%+, went to use it around 12 hours later and it was completely stone dead!Had to charge for a good ten minutes before I could get it to switch on, checked GSam and it was the kernel that had drained it overnight, nearly 10 hours CPU on time (I keep location, syncing etc turned off) I had similar issues with the kernel when I first bought it in January and it eventually became okay - first time this has happened on 5.1 though, and was a couple of weeks after updating which included a factory reset.

Need to keep an eye on it, haven't used it for a few days as I'm away from a wifi connection currently, so isn't being used.

It done it again today, fully charged at 11.45am, came to use it at 5.30pm and it was at at 48% - Gsam saying kernel had used 93%, inbuilt battery blaming android system? Essentially cpu is is running three quarters of the time and it's being kept awake for T full time it's off charge :( Has used 20% in 45 minutes with light browsing. Anyone else having similar issues? I run  my devices fairly lightly with few apps - basically used as a browser.

Will factory reset, again.

I have aa similar problem with a lollipop updated Hudl 2, it was ok for a few weeks, then this last week Android OS is running down the battery in sleep mode, doesn't change if I disable WiFi. There must have been a recent update from play store which has caused this - anyone else notice the issue?

I had the exact same problem until today, went through the usual reset, battery pull stuff.

I followed the Tesco instructions line by line... Factory reset and install external apps one by one. (which is a pain).

VIBER  was one culprit, overriding the systems WiFi policy instructing the HUDL to keep WiFi on constantly and Android OS at the top of the tree virtually constantly.

The other was the Email app (both Type and Aqua tried), I limited them to sync only when WiFi is switched on, not constantly.

Problem seems to have stopped, at least for now.

Just an update to my post above, the Android OS problem using the CPU constantly has NOT gone away.

The battery drains 15% in half an hour with the HUDL2 lasting about 20 hours on standby with WiFi & all syncing off.

Mine was a refurbished one and Lollipop updated (big mistake, esp. with battery issues and the OTG functionality gone)

It's back to Tesco on Tuesday.

Have any of you guys tried greenify? It works pretty well in stopping apps running in the background and I think it helps the battery life on the hudl2.

I'm not rooted and have disabled apps I don't use too.

I've used Greenify on my Hudl 2 since I got it. Great app.

Works well with and without root.
