Orange Care Vs Third-Party

I've just taken a look at the costs of Orange Care...£60 per year. Sounds like a lot for insurance of a single item, so I was wondering if anyone has any thoughts on:

- Insuring it under your home insurance

- Taking out third party phone insurance

From what I understand so far, you can cover the phone against accidental damage and theft with your home insurance. It's relatively cheap (cost depends on current cover, you may already have it!) but you are still liable for fraudulent use i.e. call costs.

Alternatively, you can seek out third party insurance. I've just heard from CUSC, who class the SPV as a phone, not a PDA (they cover both). It's only £40 per year, a good saving on the Orange Care. Standard BBC disclaimer applies..."other insurance deals may be available" ;-)

I'm not too up to speed on the cover offered for these schemes, and how each one compares with the other. Does anyone have any thoughts on the best way to go? Previous threads I've found suggest that the Orange "Emergency Cover" (i.e. cover taken out for a specific claim) for this phone is a bit steep and frankly a rip-off

Obviously the idea of not taking out insurance doesn't seem to attractive. Especially as it's a very distinctive device, and I am currently very paranoid about using it in public without insurance!

Oh, and another thought...does any of the cover provide for malicious damage? We've no doubt all seen the modem dialers that some popups try to push onto a PC, making your modem hang up and dial a premium service. This is a possible risk on this phone, especially with MS's reputation for security!!

Cheers for the links, I'd found the latter two already, but not the first.

The links don't really go into what I'm asking though. I'm with the thoughts behind the first thread, the insurance pushed to you by the shop is always going to be a bit naff, and the pushing is based on sales figures/commissions. It's the same deal as the extended waranty that they try to sell you in all of the Dixons groups, I remember once being offered insurance that cost 75% the price of the item! They would not take no for an answer until I threated to just forget about the whole thing! The salesman must have been behind his targets that day!

What I'm looking into is getting another company to provide the cover. Generally speaking, I will never buy any product that is offered to me, such as loads, credit cards, all the usual phone / snail-mail spams. You can always find a better deal if you take a look around yourself.

Hence me looking for better deals on insurance. The one I mentioned doesn't appear to have any mention of turnaround time on claims, so I guess that it's not too favourable. Otherwise, they would advertise it as a feature.

Getting a new phone quickly seems to be the best part of the Orange Care plan, but I still think that £60 per year is a little expensive for something I've always bought on my phone, but never ever actually had to use.

"The great thing about Orange Care is that they replace your phone immeadiately, few questions asked, rather than repair it. " That's something of a generalisation. You may not get your own phone back repaired... but unless it's pretty new (I forget HOW new) what you'll usually get back is someone else's repaired phone, refurbed and boxed up like new. Remember, more than half of the phones that are returned as "faulty" are checked over thoroughly... and there's nothing at all wrong with them. They become instant "replacement" phones.

They feel look and can be used as brand new, which is what counts...

If they're not as good as your previous phone, you're legally entitled to another replacement...

With the dodgy silver paint job I think they would have trouble passing off any phone over two days old as new. I returned mine last week when the ir port cover dropped off and it was scratched and gouged to buggery just from sitting in my pocket.

Still an ace phone though.

Hi all,

Had my SPV replaced when it failed to bounce on the concrete! One call early evening on a Sunday, one handset delivered to my work by 10am Monday.

£5 quid a month well spent.

Also, there was no possible way to tell, that my handset was a refurb, and even now 3 weeks later i still have no idea, maybe new, maybe not. Lets face it most of these handsets are being returned is that they prolly dont like the phone for xxxx reason and are probably less than a weeks old useage.

Ahh and the lack of excess charge is always welcome.

It'd be easier to pick holes in Newtons Law of Gravity :)

Does anyone know who is actually repairing the returned SPV handsets ?

I have a mate that works in the Orange repair centre and they haven't seen any SPV handsets.

Could it be Hays, as I have heard them mentioned on here before ?

Also there is no option on the Poll for Work phones where the Company pays for any damage/repairs/loss etc.

Believe me Orange Care is really worth it

My mate signed up a new contract and got 3 months free insurance included with a 3rd party insurer. After the 3rd month he was payin £8p/m for insurance. A few months later he lost his phone, he got a crime reference no. notified his phone insurer, they charged his £50 access, he had to wait 3 weeks until they sent him a replacement handset and on top of all that they DONT replace the SIM card so he had go through all the hassle of ordering a replacement which cost him an additional £10!!!

BUT if he had Orange Care and he lost his phone, all he would have to do is get a crime reference no., call up Orange CS, and within 24hrs a replacement handset with SIM will be couriered to anywhere he was within the UK!!!

I think thats a much better deal than these other insurers. Some do 4 yr cover for cheap but this still will leave u calling up about 4 different people to get your phone back with everything, and u might end up spending more in the long run if u have to pay access.

Also I think Orange Care goes down in price every year if you arent a frequent claimer, it can go as low as £2.50 a month.

:) Man I think I should work for Orange Retail!

No point. Any company with an Orange monthly contract automatically gets Orange Care for free. Lucky gits...should be the other way around if you ask me! :)

Heh. And doesn't it rule!

Got free cover on both of our SPVs, had mine replaced three times on warranty Care, and once on insurance already...

Although, it isn't automatic - you have to specifically request it first :)
