Date change for the update?

Crossposted from the MS newsgroup regarding the 24th Feb update press release:

"]I think the info that is on that page comes from a press release Orange

issued at Cannes earlier in the week. I was a guinea pig for the update

process earlier today. I  shouldn't really comment on it in detail, so I'll

just say it takes 20 minutes and is designed to leave your data intact. I

will let people draw their own conclusions from the fact that Orange have

NOT felt it necessary to put out a press release saying that the date has

changed.

I've bolded the bit I'm on about.

Has the date been changed?

Paul: Anything from Orange/Microsoft that you can disclose in this respect?

Word from O today is that everything is still on for Monday.

I also get the impression the update will cover at least UK and French regions, maybe more?

P

PS The update has absolutely nothing to do with MS - no MS code is changed in the update.

I think what the bit in bold is trying to hint at is that the testing of the update has gone ok, so that they don't need to put the date back.

Just a thought :?

Don't kick me for asking, but does anyone think/know if this update will include anything for the danes? I know we already got one, but it's lacking sooooo many translations + the danish T9 dictonary is missing(something my gf is nagging about(I gave her a phone when I bought one) since she sends some 400+ sms's a month)..

I don't think it will, I think Denmark will see a seperate update myself - otherwise there wouldn't have been any point in telling us Brits to not use the DK update...

I'm certain it won't include a DK T9/characterset. More likely it'll have all UK-local settings (GPRS, update et cetera) which'll be annoying and time-consuming for us in DK to put right. I'll skip it over unless there's something really worthwhile included - like the bloody T9 actually remembering words after a power-cycle....

Does anyone know if the much sought after update includes a simple sms character counter??? Getting real sick of counting individual characters!

Let's get this straight... the release date is "still on track" (i.e. it'll be released tomorrow) but 15X still haven't even been officially advised that there WILL be an update, and nobody knows where the data for download will be posted. Microsoft's release date for WIn95 was April 1994. It finally came out in the third quarter of 1995... incomplete. (Intel had released the "Pentium Pro" chip on the strength of Microsoft's assurance that Win95 would be "pure 32 bit". What got released was a kludge of 16 and 32 bit code, to make the deadlines.) Does nobody remember the ribald comments when Mrs Gates announced she was pregnant? (That the baby would be due in nine months... or then again, seeing as this was a Microsoft baby, maybe 13 or more...)

Erm, so is it Orange who is making the update or Microsoft? Paul, you say that no microsoft code is changed in the update, but the OS is being updated? I'm confused :)

Posted

No, the OS isn't being updated.

In total, there are four areas of the phone:

-GSM (which Orange sort out)

-Bootloader (which HTC sort out)

-IPSM (which MS/Orange/HTC sort out)

-WinCE (which MS sort out)

From what I hear, only the GSM and IPSM are being updated, and only by Orange/HTC.

We knew before 15X of the date the SPV was coming out, and the places that stocked the phone. 15X only really started knowing after we told them.

I assume 15X are emailed copies of press releases or encouraged to read them?

Who or what is 15X ?

Numbers beginning with 15 - 150 customer services or 156 fax & data etc

The Danish update release went like this:

1st ETA from Orange: early december 2002 - nowt happened, no message from Orange, nothing.

2nd ETA from Orange: mid-december 2002 - nowt happened, no message from Orange, nothing. On Orange DK's webpage it still says that there'll be an update in late november 2002 (!)

3rd ETA from Orange: mid january 2003 - they update's ready, just that there are some naughty people who've posted a SIM lock workaround on a web-board. Needs fixing. Tch.

4th and final ETA from Orange: 27th January 2003. It's there, sometime during the morning.

So, my UK SPV-siblings, don't hold your collective breath. I'd be inclined to believe the "tomorrow" thing. The UK update's bound to be more-or-less the same as the DK, just with a few bugfixes. And no Danish language option (?)
