changing the Sim card on ZTE blade

Hi

I have an ancient Soni Ericcson which I have all my main numbers on but now its on its way out and I'd like to use my ZTE blade as my main phone

I put the Sim card in my ZTE blade from the Sony erriccson

I'm getting a "number not known" in 'about phone'

Also a message saying
" do not find update package (update zip) on external SD card please confirm that update package has been copied to rootdirectory on external SD card"

which is gobbeldy gook to me - I'm told the phone is not recognising the Sim card? 

 

thanks for any advice as to what to do to get it going xx
