Orange P800 is NOT APPLICATION LOCKED!

I see this as a good sign for the SPV. When you look at it, application locking is anti-competative. If Orange were to try to stamp down on SPV unlocking, they wouldn't have a leg to stand legally if there are other products available that are unlocked. The whole "prevent damage to the network" thing is thrown out the window.

We still need to persuade them to provide the existing SPVs a better way to unlock, along with a stern warning about backing up and how to do a hard reset.

To be honest, I think a large part of the locking is do do with protecting many users from themselves. You can do a fair bit of damage with the un-signed apps, especially ones such as the Registry Editor. Until the SmartPhone platform is more mature and robust, I think it was a wise move. Most of the people around these parts are a bit more technically inclined, and there is always help available if you mess up. But for Joe Blogg who doesn't visit sites like this, keeping Regedit at arms length will probably save Orange a load of money on Customer Service costs...."Hello, yes I think I broke it. I deleted something called "HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT".

I don't really think so, it's simply another revenue stream for Orange. Regedit comes with every Windows PC, but users don't have to use it; it's the same with SmartPhone, users have to conciously install and run a registry editor which non techie users are unlikely to do! And if Orange do get customer service calls saying "I deleted xx registry key" they can simply turn round and say that what you did was at your own risk - would you phone M$ if you accidentally formatted your HDD? :)

Incedentally, there will be an official announcement on Freeware signing for the SPV "soon".

Any more info on that - or is it another hint that Paul's dropped that we're not meant to know about yet? :)

Hmm, "soon", so maybe by August then?

From my correspondence (sp) with Baltimore. That's all they're letting on/want me to say. But there is more, official, news due in the near future.
