Guest icornish Posted February 23, 2003 Report Posted February 23, 2003 I'm currently stuck in Hong Kong, and will be for some time. Does this mean I won't be able to get the update, or can I download an executable from the web site (please say it is so...), and have the update. As yet, I've not found a provider here that gives me GPRS (Not even Orange had GPRS here!) Ic
Guest Chris b.a.r.f. Posted February 23, 2003 Report Posted February 23, 2003 The Danish update was delivered via Orange DK's website rather than Orange Update. It involved a complete ROM flash so it's difficult to imagine the UK update being anything other than a standard Windows download, too.
Guest Paul [MVP] Posted February 23, 2003 Report Posted February 23, 2003 The UK update *will* also be delivered this way, I am told. P
Guest Chris b.a.r.f. Posted February 23, 2003 Report Posted February 23, 2003 "]The UK update *will* also be delivered this way, I am told. I'd be surprised if it was any other way, given that the DK update file was some 11MB. Just imagine the fun and cost of downloading that :) Maybe just me being thick (again) - wouldn't it be impossible to run a complete ROM update from the phone, anyway? Even if there was enough free memory... Another thing I've been wondering about: It was only the Orange software that was subject to an update. Why, then, a complete ROM reflash rather than just updating the relevant files via Orange Update?
Guest Paul [MVP] Posted February 23, 2003 Report Posted February 23, 2003 You could run the update from the phone, but for the fact it's going to update the Radio Stack (i.e. 'GSM' area). This CANNOT be done via Orange update. So, in conclusion, it has to be a downloadable file :) P

Guest Paul [MVP] Posted February 23, 2003 Report Posted February 23, 2003 No. You can't flash the Radio Stack area of the phone using Orange Update. P
Guest Chris b.a.r.f. Posted February 23, 2003 Report Posted February 23, 2003 "]You can't flash the Radio Stack area of the phone using Orange Update. What I meant was, could the *whole* update executable be downloaded to the SD-card and run from there, in an OS-shell if need be? i.e. just the same as running it from the PC. I know there might be loads of limiting factors, but is it *theoretically* possible? (could've phrased the original question better, maybe)
Guest fraser Posted February 23, 2003 Report Posted February 23, 2003 Yeah, it could be done. The update downloads, disconnects then runs. However, there are many problems associated with this, such as having enough storage space for the download, plus temporary space while installing. Then a separate installer would have to be created and tested as the windows one won't run directly, no mean feat if any data loss has to be tested for, that's a lot of testing. Basically, it's not worth it, too much work for very little gain.
Guest ajb3000 Posted February 23, 2003 Report Posted February 23, 2003 Is/Will there be a complete list of changes in this update made available? I'd love to know exactly what is being fixed/changed.

I just wondered if, given unlimited resources, it could be done. Of course there's loads of pitfalls, but in the (near) future.....
