Guest mistersheepie Posted February 24, 2003 Report Posted February 24, 2003 Hi Guys I need some help getting into this smartphone dev thing. I've downloaded the kits and I can't think of much to do with them - I'm sorry, I got a B- in creativity classes. I love the gear and personally reckon MS have done a pretty OK job on transplanting Outlook onto such an ickle form factor. I've been writing Windows apps since 1985 and was one of the original developers of Lotus Organizer (anybody remember that now?) and I have a month free on my hands to... well, get into smartphone development. So, what would you like? I've looked at the requests in the software section and... not been inspired, so... please give me some more suggestions Obviously anything I develop as a result will be absolutely FOC, but you need to bear in mind my skills.... I ain't no Florin, so don't ask for more battery life, more speed or some arse kick of a game. But if you have a business app requirement with cool UI, I may be your man..... Let me know guys..... and yes, I can wait until you've all had fun with your updates. :)
Guest pteale Posted February 24, 2003 Report Posted February 24, 2003 Personally i'd like to see the following for the platform.. Irc client Telnet client A decent to do list app, the one on the spv is pathetic
Guest CaptainZok Posted February 24, 2003 Report Posted February 24, 2003 Any chance of a pocket word ap
Guest hellboundpeanut Posted February 24, 2003 Report Posted February 24, 2003 i know you "ain't no Florin" but if you could just find a way to unlock the buggar to all networks and charge less than 50! :) ... if not well... a pocket word app would be good yes..
Guest Carnivor Posted February 24, 2003 Report Posted February 24, 2003 well, as loads of ppl here want the pic to contact app, try that one out
Guest uczmeg Posted February 24, 2003 Report Posted February 24, 2003 Well i'd love a joystick operated keypad. As seen on the Nokia 7650 at: http://www.kylom.com/nokia7650english.html#SOFTKEYPAD I hate texting as it is, with the keys on the spv it is just horrible. This would save the day! Cheers Marc
Guest fraser Posted February 24, 2003 Report Posted February 24, 2003 SSL tunneling would be the killer app for me. What I'd like is a process that listens on a local socket for input and forwards the data to the same port number on a defined internet host. It's the only way to get SSL tunneled e-mail on the phone, and I am not happy about currently having my e-mail password (and e-mail) sent in plain text across the mobile network AND the internet. You can already do it with STunnel, which has been ported already, but you need to manually start the process yourself for every send & receive. A listening service would be ideal, as it would be on demand. Kinda similar to the Unix inet.d concept, which starts processes whenever there is a connection to a particular port. You'd have a list of mapping thus: 143 stunnel myhost:143 Then by pointing at localhost:143 on the SmartPhone, you actually get to the destination myhost over SSL. Mmmm, privacy! Might be a little more specific a project than you anticipated, but it's pretty small bit of code. I'd do it myself, I can program in just about any modern language, but I've never done any windows development and the SDK scares me a bit! :)
Guest pibrahim Posted February 24, 2003 Report Posted February 24, 2003 Nooooo guys, think bigger :) Lets admit it, we all love a good game on the Who wants to be a Millionaire Quiz Machine! But the only problem is occasionally not knowing the answer. Now, SPV's aren't quick enough to enable you to connect to the 'net in time to check online, but if say we had a program that stored a database of questions and answers (which we could just input over time, or take from quiz books, etc), then all you'd have to do on the SPV would type in a keyword from the question, the program searches through questions that contain the keyword, and displays the answer. Hey presto, you're on your way to the £20 jackpot! Repeat throughout the day for loadsa cash! Well, that'd be my ideal program anyway...
Guest Deemon Posted February 24, 2003 Report Posted February 24, 2003 the pic to contact app would be most appreciated mistersheepie
Guest pibrahim Posted February 24, 2003 Report Posted February 24, 2003 Who wants to be a Millionaire database would have most financial gain :)
Guest Deemon Posted February 24, 2003 Report Posted February 24, 2003  lets get something done that people actually will find useful for the SPV eh ?
Guest pibrahim Posted February 24, 2003 Report Posted February 24, 2003 Booooo. Yeah, there's been loadsa requests for the pic-contact app, so I suppose thats prob the one to go for. Paul's said a Word viewer's on the way, so prob not worth doing that one. Perhaps finding a way of creating an SMS character counter? Can't remember if that needs priviledge access or not.
Guest pibrahim Posted February 24, 2003 Report Posted February 24, 2003 Btw, wasn't advocating simply that program I mentioned above - more a database program, which would presumably have the ability of keyword searching... But anyways, pic-contact would be kewl.
Guest Shire29 Posted February 24, 2003 Report Posted February 24, 2003 An IRC app would be well cool, although I'm not sure how much data transfer would be kicking about for this one. Less ambitious would be the pic-contact app, although not sure this has that much practicality just looks good. What about some mini database app, or a spreadsheet. Doesn't have to have excel capability, but something where we can store lists, do calculations, tables and the like would be very very useful. Again not sure how far away Pocket Excel is from being used on the smartphone, in fact I thought that Sendo were advertising it for the Z100 before it was canned ? Lastly for me a decent media player. Cheers, Shire
Guest youngerpants Posted February 24, 2003 Report Posted February 24, 2003 a couple of repeats here telnet ssl (if poss) IRC tv remote (i realise the IR is a bit pathetic, but my lounge is smaaaalllll) ebook reader and finally, and i realise that anyone could do this... Dope Wars (that game will get me every time) And thank you very very very much if you manage any of these!!!
Guest pteale Posted February 24, 2003 Report Posted February 24, 2003 I thought that i read somewhere that the infra red on the spv wasnt capable of being used as a tv remote, i forget why though.
Guest hellboundpeanut Posted February 24, 2003 Report Posted February 24, 2003 cant be used as a remote cos its not commecial bandwitch or something! i read that on oranges FAQs. . tomathy
Guest youngerpants Posted February 24, 2003 Report Posted February 24, 2003 in that case i remove my remote controll idea and replace it with... ping would be quite handy
Guest lucky Posted February 24, 2003 Report Posted February 24, 2003 ah i know this would be useless to the majority of you but, may be you could spare sometime for this even if its very basic. my girlfriend is diabetic, she has to inject insulin and do blood sugar tests all day long. what would be really helpful would be a program to record test results and insulin doses and then graph them as time over sugar level with markers for injections. this is very basic to do on excel but if she could do it on her phone it would improve her quality of life. this sort of thing is available for pocket pc but alas doesnt work on smartphone. on something useful for everyone else please do an alarm clock program multiple times and days . . . this is a must, it was implemented pretty well on the t68. how about a chess game with ir link id love that. anywho i love that people devote their own time to freeware . . . i love you guys.
Guest pibrahim Posted February 24, 2003 Report Posted February 24, 2003 Chess would be a great game for the SPV, and one that nobody seems to be working on at the mo!
Guest stehendo Posted February 24, 2003 Report Posted February 24, 2003 decent mp3 player gets my vote, would love to be able to create playlists and be able to fastforward through tracks.
Guest Myke Posted February 24, 2003 Report Posted February 24, 2003 i agree, we definatly need a program that lets us add pics to our contacts and when they call it displays their pic. that SHOULD be a standard feature on a phone with a color screen... at least it is on every other phone :)
Guest Gorskar Posted February 24, 2003 Report Posted February 24, 2003 Yea, I'd love a decent chess game, with one player versus CPU, and 2 player option. It's be great if it could be played over IR, or even cooler, over GPRS (im sure it would only need to send a miniscule amount of data) I suppose it would have to have privaleged access though, which would mean grappling with orange.
Guest simonastro Posted February 24, 2003 Report Posted February 24, 2003 just a gimmick I know but if someone could remove the 2 second pause on the ringtone we'd be able to have proper looping ringtones ! that would be very groovy xx
