Guest pete1312 Posted February 25, 2003 Report Posted February 25, 2003 I'm totally pee'd off with Orange and even more confused by all the various different topics on this site relating to "Update Problems", so I've taken the liberty to start this new Topic SPECIFICALLY for the above headed problem. As I understand at time of writing, a seperate Update has been "promised" by Orange to correct this Win ME error. This should be up on their download site (presumably the same site as Monday's Update?) by 11:00 am GMT on Tuesday, 25th Feb. I'm now off to bed until 11:01 am. Perhaps someone would be kind enough to leave me a message here for when I awake to confirm that it IS there, and that it works? Thanks in advance
Guest pete1312 Posted February 25, 2003 Report Posted February 25, 2003 I've concluded (rightly or wrongly) that earlier references to 11am were based on USA time. Therefore I now guess around 4pm UK time (similar to yesterday).
Guest mattat Posted February 25, 2003 Report Posted February 25, 2003 That would tally with what other people have said elsewhere in this forum - I think it was Cliffhanger Just spoken to Orange on 156 and was put through to their `2nd line' team. Andy there confirmed that they are replacing the current download with a new version due to the current version causing a freeze on some handsets. I asked if they would be withdrawing the current update or posting a message on their site - he didnt know. He also didnt know if the new download would have a different file name... He said it would be available from 4pm today. It also gives them a bit more time to correct the problem that 11am GMT would have done.
Guest sarge Posted February 25, 2003 Report Posted February 25, 2003 as the SPV isn't officially available in the US (correct me if I'm wrong!) and the UK update certainly isn't applicable in the US as these things are location specific, WHY THE HELL ARE ORANGE OPERATING ON USA TIME!!!!!....Orange, get a F****** grip!!!!
Guest sarge Posted February 25, 2003 Report Posted February 25, 2003 Before you continue with the update please check that your PC is running the following: that your PC is running Microsoft Windows 98, Windows 98 second edition, Windows ME, Windows NT 4.x, Windows 2000, or Windows XP yep, thats what it says on the orange site. Now you'd think these bozos would have had the sense to test this on all of the operating systems that they quote, wouldn't you. I mean its not exactly a trade secret that there are a few differences between the version of windows. Its also interesting to note that, although various people have bought this matter to their attention, not one orange rep has had the sense to inform the web guys about it and get them to stick up a note on the site for those that haven't downloaded the fix yet. So, happily on they go, snotting off another bunch of users. Way to run a company guys! Would the last orange customer please turn off the lights!!!!!
Guest Paul_W Posted February 25, 2003 Report Posted February 25, 2003 Isn't this list of operating systems different to that showing on the update page yesterday? I don't remember Windows 98SE being on there?
Guest smartman Posted February 25, 2003 Report Posted February 25, 2003 how many O' technicians does it take to change a lightbulb O's answer: what's a lightbulb?
Guest pete1312 Posted February 25, 2003 Report Posted February 25, 2003 as the SPV isn't officially available in the US (correct me if I'm wrong!) and the UK update certainly isn't applicable in the US as these things are location specific, WHY THE HELL ARE ORANGE OPERATING ON USA TIME!!!!!....Orange, get a F****** grip!!!! The original mention of 11am was posted yesterday on MS Smartphone Public Forum site by (I think) an American! 11am was not directly quoted by Orange.
Guest mjc1975 Posted February 25, 2003 Report Posted February 25, 2003 Anyone know if the ME update is working yet??? I have 2 PC's in my house, one runs ME the other Win 98!! What a pain in the arse
Guest pete1312 Posted February 25, 2003 Report Posted February 25, 2003 Just this minute checked Orange Update site. Looks exactly the same as yesterday :!:
Guest CaptainZok Posted February 25, 2003 Report Posted February 25, 2003 just had a look at the ftp site still showing ONLY yesterdays files
Guest gevans2000 Posted February 25, 2003 Report Posted February 25, 2003 THIS IS JUST TAKING THE P*SS Just spoke to O on 156, they didn't seem to know when the update would be made available for 98 and ME users, although they did know about the problem. OK fair enough, we all know their not briefed properly by their superiors. I have not seen a single post from anyone running winME or 98 saying that the update worked (although I haven't looked that hard), so it seems that they simply didn't test it on these OSs. They just assumed it would work - which it doesn't. To be honest, I don't mind waiting for the update, even if it is slightly frustrating reading how fast everyone else's spv is. What really p*sses me off is that they haven't changed the update page on Orange.com to state that it doesn't work with ME or 98(SE). This is absolutely appalling customer service - do they think people won't notice the large error message that comes up when they try it? ORANGE - YOU'RE A BUNCH OF COWBOYS.
Guest rcoley Posted February 25, 2003 Report Posted February 25, 2003 i have just spoken to 156, and have been told that the ME fixed update is on orange.net. currently on phone again to another 156 muppet who has said he hasn't heard of it being put on!
Guest rcoley Posted February 25, 2003 Report Posted February 25, 2003 same 156 muppet has just come back saying that they know nothing of this ME fixed update! is going to speak to head muppet, to find out what the hell is going on GOD DAMMIT orange, YOU ARE SOOO S**T vodafone et al, all is forgiven- prper phone network here we come....
Guest pete1312 Posted February 25, 2003 Report Posted February 25, 2003 Ar$e and elbow are just 2 words which spring to mind
Guest CaptainZok Posted February 25, 2003 Report Posted February 25, 2003 ask the head muppet to speak to the office cat you will probably get more sense out of it
Guest rcoley Posted February 25, 2003 Report Posted February 25, 2003 after causing 156 muppets head to spin, he finally gets it! he said that oragne.com has the updated version which was done at 11AM this morning on Orange.com & Orange.net. bloody hell! definitely upgrading to another handset soon, P800 as it is mad by a PROPER phone company and has no affiliation with orange like the SPV has. can't have a phone that is only cupable to orange as they haven't got a bloody clue. here we go again.....
Guest pete1312 Posted February 25, 2003 Report Posted February 25, 2003 after causing 156 muppets head to spin, he finally gets it! he said that oragne.com has the updated version which was done at 11AM this morning on Orange.com & Orange.net. Well I for one don't believe it! 5 minutes ago the update site was still showing just the exact same file as yesterday!
Guest CaptainZok Posted February 25, 2003 Report Posted February 25, 2003 02-24-03 02:57PM 5953630 Canary_RUUv0.32_CEv1.35.06_ORG_UK_SHIP_no.smartphone.exe correct me if i'm wrong but this is still the old upgrade file thats sat on their ftp server
Guest TheSmee Posted February 25, 2003 Report Posted February 25, 2003  Tried both updates and neither of them work on windows 98se. Try to run update and get the old 'this program has performed an illegal operation and will be shut down' message. Gettin mad now
Guest pete1312 Posted February 25, 2003 Report Posted February 25, 2003 No - you don't need correcting!
Guest rcoley Posted February 25, 2003 Report Posted February 25, 2003 where do you find the update instructions, as I am only aware of the one that you can find by going into My Computer, C:, program files, RUU. have I missed something
Guest mjc1975 Posted February 25, 2003 Report Posted February 25, 2003 In the time that i have been waiting i could have dowloaded a ripped copy of 2000 or xp and installed it instead!!! Come to think of it that isnt a bad idea!!! Bet i can do this before the fix is on the website!!
Guest Thruk Posted February 25, 2003 Report Posted February 25, 2003 You could try my WinME workaround - (see separate thread). Not sure whether it would work with 98?
Guest mjc1975 Posted February 25, 2003 Report Posted February 25, 2003 I have just checked the website and it has been updated.... They have taken out the bit where it says it will work with ME and 98 and are now just saying 2000 and XP - Nice....
