Guest warren Posted February 25, 2003 Report Posted February 25, 2003 If like me you use a number of computers and thought that just plugging the phone into the laptop with your USB cable would do the trick...think again. You must install Active Sync first. (Bummer) So do the active sync installation. (It will detect hardware HTC Device) Then Disconnect the Device Then Activate the Modem and reconnect the device It will then ask for more drivers so give it the modem driver. It should install ok Then Set the Dial number in your connection to be *99# Then Add the following line +cgdcont=1,"IP","orangeinternet","",0,0 to the advanced dialing option of your modem (cheers pagemakers) In Windows go to Control Panel/Modems Select Modem/Properties/Advanced Add the string to the "extra init commands" box. And there you go a GPRS modem QUESTION Is this part of the £6 access pack? or a different tarrif?
Guest Tommo Posted February 25, 2003 Report Posted February 25, 2003 Excellent...this is what I needed to know...the bad news is i am in reading and the cd is in Essex. can the activesync software be downloaded from anywhere??..whoops forget that found it...
Guest lycrawearer Posted February 25, 2003 Report Posted February 25, 2003 Warren ... to clarify your excellent post .. In the dial up number section is it just *99# or is it *99#ISP's dial up number - e.g. *99#0845xxxxxxx ? Have tried it with *99#0845xxxxxxx and I'm getting error 727 - loopback error ?!?! lycrawearer
Guest warren Posted February 25, 2003 Report Posted February 25, 2003 just *99# thats all that will kick in the gprs mode on the phone the connection string will then authenticate with orange
Guest lycrawearer Posted February 25, 2003 Report Posted February 25, 2003 Cheers That's probably where I am going wrong & getting this loopback error !! I'll try it later tonight after the upgrade & sim-lock removal :-) Many Thanks lycrawearer
Guest Monolithix [MVP] Posted February 25, 2003 Report Posted February 25, 2003 Seems to be working, if this post goes up then it can be confirmed... I also find it slightly ironic that the HTC driver isn't digitally signed :)
Guest crimminsky Posted February 25, 2003 Report Posted February 25, 2003 help needed please, I've followed the steps and installed the new driver for the usb but when I got to control panel/modems and select HTC modem it will not let me see the properties. it comes up with the error that the propities cannot be viewed as the files are corrupted, remove and try again. have tried many times now with the driver downloaded from different locations.....in system/modems I can choose htc modem and check the driver details...it comes back with c/windows/system/serial.vxd!!!!! this was installed in 1998!!!! can anyone help...please

Guest Monolithix [MVP] Posted February 25, 2003 Report Posted February 25, 2003 Probably a NT-only driver then i'm afraid.....
Guest kasuku Posted February 25, 2003 Report Posted February 25, 2003 What is the fastest speed on a dial up from this phone? I've seen some spec say it is Hcsd and others say its only Csd.
Guest chocobogo Posted February 25, 2003 Report Posted February 25, 2003 I cant seem to get the modem working!!!! I really need to get this working!!! I have active sync installed, have had so since i got my SPV, but It never recognises my phone as a modem. I have the modem.inf file off these forums but havent had the chance to use it!! What do u mean by enabling the modem?? I have the connection under "Modem Link" set to USB. But still there is no luck with recognising it!! I am running WIn XP Pro SP1 Aprreciate any help!!!
Guest dma Posted February 26, 2003 Report Posted February 26, 2003 You must install Active Sync first. (Bummer) I have got the USB modem working on a windows 2000 laptop that has never has activesync running on it... chocobogo Once you select USB then select "menu" on the same screen using the right hand button below the screen and select "activate". The settings on screen will then be grayed out, this means the modem is active, then just plug it in.
Guest pete1312 Posted February 26, 2003 Report Posted February 26, 2003 Seems to me that those of us with "state of the arc" OS such as Win 98, 98SE & ME have been overlooked  (Anyone with 2000/NT/XP etc should be able to find a solution on this site somewhere).
Guest wodaman Posted February 26, 2003 Report Posted February 26, 2003 Got the thing working, i.e. the modem can connect to the orange-network. However, it fails to register to the network. It keeps waiting till a tcp timeout appears. Any idea what's wrong.
Guest sykix Posted February 26, 2003 Report Posted February 26, 2003 Warren, how are you so damned ugly. I saw that pic in FHM a few years back. (I hope, otherwise I'll be eating my digital words)
Guest lycrawearer Posted February 26, 2003 Report Posted February 26, 2003 Anyone got any idea how get WinXp to report the correct connected spped, when using the USB modem and parameters as above ? My system is showing 115k (but that the port speed I guess) lycrawearer
Guest sykix Posted February 26, 2003 Report Posted February 26, 2003 There is no way. This is because that is the maximum speed of the connection which it has established (the port speed). The actual speed is far lower than this. To determine it, do a bandwidth speed test, e.g. Bandwidth Place and select the one for ISDN / mobile. As an example, if you are connected to broadband through a LAN, your lan speed is probably 100Mbps (what windows shows), your broadband speed is probably more like 512 or 1024 (fluctuates).

Guest chocobogo Posted February 26, 2003 Report Posted February 26, 2003 ok finally got it working using the GPRS connection!! Does anyone know if this comes off the £6 month GPRS usage quota?? Need to know!!
Guest chocobogo Posted February 26, 2003 Report Posted February 26, 2003 also how do i dial an ISP like Ukonline I keep getting the loopback error!
Guest Posted February 26, 2003 Report Posted February 26, 2003 The GPRS charges will come under the SPV promotional package because it is basically all GPRS data to the 'orangeinternet' access point. The data that is being sent and requested by the laptop is essentially the same as when the SPV is out of the cradle making standard network use. As for circuit switched data calls (CSD), the phone will only cope with CSD, not HSCSD, although I am not sure if it is 9.6kbps or 14.4kbps. I will have to give a go later on... Foz
