I've just got and a new SD card 64mb, with the intention of dropping some tunes on to it. Dragged and dropped a tune 3 mins long which I ripped off a CD on to the card and it has taken half the card up in space ! I was under the impression that I could get about and hours worth of music on the card or is that being optimistic ? I assume I need to compress the files which I think are WAV files can you tell me how I compress and what format I change to so I can fit some more tunes on the card.

Nice one :)

To convert .wav files to .mp3, goto www.download.com and search for CDex, download it and use it to convert the files. Makes them about a 10th of the size :) and they just put them on your SPV.

What i think you may have done is to have ripped the song to a wav format.

One song in wav format could take up as much as 40mb of space which is more than halve the capacity of your SD card.

When you rip a tune off a cd you need to rip it in mp3 format, about 128kbps is best that way the mp3 file will only take an average of about 3 to 4mb of space depending on the length of the song.

Hope that helps you Hal

Good luck, and remember, you have to use wavs for ringtones.

Hi,

Not sure If I need to create a new thread for this, but I supoose it's related anyway..my tunes are one the phone and it's working a treat, did them in WMA format takes up less space..but my questions is if I install the playlist app, does my phone need to be unlocked before I can use this app ??

Cheers

I havnt used this app my self but i beleive that the answer is no because you have to install it on the computer. It just sends the playlist files to the phone via Active Sync.

Hi, i normally use Windows Media Player to convert music films and compress them too, is CDex any better than Media Player? Thanks

I didn't know WMP could convert files, but though I haven't used it, everyone seems to think that CDex is the best.

WMP can convert to MP3 if you have the right plug-ins installed.

If this works for you, keep using it. CDex will give you more control over the ripping process, but that ain't worth the extra kludginess (i hate it when apps fight for control of the CD-drive).

That's cool, WMP for converting to MP3, and WinAMP for converting to WAV.

Thanks,

Er, you can use WMP to convert to WMA (if your ripping from CD) but i prefer to use Windows Media Encoder (free off MS site) as you can get the files smaller :)

Use Microsoft Sound Recorder (comes standard with Windows) to lower the bit-rate of WAVs.

To record MP3's i usually use Audio Grabber, but it aint free

i use the latest version of WMP and put all the files in WMA format on to my computer. (i have all my music on my hardrive 128kb/s)

the music i want to put onto my phone i first lower the bitrate of using DBpoweramp---i batch convert the files i want using WMA in its variable bit rate form (VBR) --i find this works very well.
