Have tested this numerous times now.

Go to Quick list and turn the radio off ( I need to do this for work)

then turn the radio back on.

what i find is that on reconnection GPRS automatically connects

without promting.

After April how much will this cost me?

What do you mean "GPRS connects "?

Any network only charges once a PDP context is set, what this means is that purely for being GPRS attached(having GPRS available as a carrier) there is no charge, charging is only incurred once a request is made to move data over GPRS.

Hope this helps, if it doesn't please clarify exactly what is occurring.

Exacly what I said GPRS connects without being promted to and as I use

MSN it automatically logs on so you are in effect receiving data.

It's MSN which is the problem, you have selected " run this program when connection is available" within MSN options - MSN is setting up the PDP context. The GPRS carrier is available(in essence GPRS is intended to be an "always on" connection)but as the connection goes into "standby" when not being used by an application this isn't generally charged for, MSN as an application will pass data even if your just logged in so will trigger charging(PDP context).

If anyone is interested ETSI has full GSM technical papers/protocols, an understanding of how GPRS works aids with queries like this. :)

MSN is not the problem as I am not getting a choice to connect to GPRS it is doing it by it's self.

Once a connection is available then MSN will log on, it will not create a GPRS connection by it's self

it will only log onto using an existing connection.

OK awarner, not sure how much you know about handsets m8, vast majority of handsets do GPRS attach you automatically(provided GPRS field on SIM=1) on switch on(basically the same thing) and few give the option to turn this off, this is not a bug. When you switch your handset/radio on you also connect to the CSD network(otherwise network denied or no access etc would be seen and you could not receive calls) but it requires input to make a call, MSN is basically giving you this input under GPRS. I personally would like the option of turning GPRS off as it's own entity, but not having the option is not a bug, but likely a developement decision.

On the cost side of things, if you have a call in progress under GPRS you will be charged, if you are GPRS attached but no application has made a call, you will not be.

I work as a Comms Engineer, with the great misfortune of dealing with Terminal Equipment and Networks everyday, please take what is said here as gospel. I could give you an extremely long winded explanation but it's probably easier for both of us if I don't. :) ;)

Still bloody annoying though (not you tyrant_worm :) ).

I'm conditioned to it now though and kill the session after restarting the 'phone.

There is a way to turn GPRS off, change your internet connection from automatic to pass through, that way the phone will not connect to GPRS but you can still connect through your computer. To reconnect to the GPRS network go back and select automatic or Orange GPRS.

I think I read something about this in reference to the update. It's a change M$ made to the OS to have GPRS in a more active state than it was prior to the new DK release.

The GPRS won't cause charging unless traffic is going through it, but of course if you have MSN set to automatically connect as soon as GPRS hooks up, then your gonna have traffic.

I think it's the combination of the 2 options that's the problem. If you tell MSN not to automatically connect it's not gonna cost you anything for the phone to "dial" GPRS even if you leave it "connected" all day.

The idea of GPRS is that it should be always on, and you just use it when you need data, pre-update tho, it was generally always off, except when you requested data at which point it rushed off and connected.
