Guest Chris b.a.r.f. Posted February 26, 2003 Report Posted February 26, 2003 Orange DK have just increased the price for getting the SIM lock removed from the SPV - according to the Orange DK SPV FAQ page they now want users to cough up 3699,- DK-Kroner (that's - wait for it - £338) for unlocking the phone before the contract's done, no doubt because SPV users are deserting Orange Denmark in their droves due to hopeless service/support  Just a shame they're a bit bloody late now we have the SIM-unlock tool :) EDIT: got the price a tenner too high
Guest pete1312 Posted February 26, 2003 Report Posted February 26, 2003 I personally can't get Sim Unlock to work (Win ME problem apparently), but I'm pleased for all those who can and who are deciding to desert Orange. I've no faith in them whatsoever.
Guest Southwestwall Posted February 26, 2003 Report Posted February 26, 2003 OUCH! Starving animals often feed on their young in a desparate bid to survive... BTW, nice sig, its one of my favourites. Often use it at work :) At least you'll be free to take your SPV to another network when O go down the pan in DK... Regards
Guest Chris b.a.r.f. Posted February 26, 2003 Report Posted February 26, 2003 Heh, wondered where you'd gone Max - didn't notice the change from [RN]Max in the newsgroup. Good to see you here, mate : ) Believe it, Orange are in major cashflow s**t in DK. Serves 'em right :)

I've no faith in them whatsoever. Heh. I used to have respect for Orange (mobilix, as they used to be called over here) - I've had 6½ good years (or thereabouts) with them. Now they seem to have lost the plot, big-style. It seems that no amount of twee concept-advertizing can save them now....
Guest Southwestwall Posted February 26, 2003 Report Posted February 26, 2003 Hi Chris, I got tired of the idle/ignorant/stroppy few over at the NG who bleated when told to go and do their own homework. They were repeatedly asking for info that was posted a few lines above their thread and getting shirty when I dared to take a pop at them for it. I can live with the odd daft comment here, partly as there's some young'uns on board who know no better and also its much harder to keep track of new posts on a web forum. Over on an NG there is absolutely no excuse - the OE reader is well suited to tracking large amounts of post. I'll still pop back there for the top info from the MS crew - they don't always realise what they let slip... But the innovative stuff and fast info is here... as always. [i can live with the web format I guess - it will be easier in May when they finally upgrade the local exchange to ADSL] Regards
Guest Southwestwall Posted February 26, 2003 Report Posted February 26, 2003 I'm drifting off-thread a bit here, but I've held my horses with the update and learned a heap by lurking/searching for a day or so. My plan is to - SimUnlock - once I find my Voda sim Do a current full backup on a 64MB SD. Figure out properly how USBterm works, so I can retore the old bootloader post-update. Install the UK update. Restore the old bootloader. Check everything out. Do a final 64MB full backup Then live long and prosper - oh, and start network shopping if Orange are too greedy with GPRS come May. Not bad for just one day's patience and a bit of homework that I keep trying to preach the merits of... hehehe. The 7P rule is always in force! Regards
Guest Chris b.a.r.f. Posted February 26, 2003 Report Posted February 26, 2003 Know what you mean mate - I try to refer newbies over here as often as possible. I keep an eye on the NG every day tho'; as you say, Neil/James/Robert are always good for a bit of inside-info :) p.s. Caught that drubbing you gave that lad who didn't bother with a search the other day - dead funny ;)
Guest pete1312 Posted February 26, 2003 Report Posted February 26, 2003 ...Neil/James/Robert are always good for a bit of inside-info :) What about Leigh Geary (MVP)? (He's the guy who alledgedly had inside info from O that the amended Win ME UK Update would be online by 11:00am Tues). Can he normally be relied upon? (Not wishing to interrupt your "private" chat by the way).
Guest Southwestwall Posted February 26, 2003 Report Posted February 26, 2003 Gears is usually a good source. His site, http://www.coolsmartphone.com is an excellent SPV resource. As for the 98/ME issue: If he was fed a bum steer from inside Orange, how would he know until the time came and went? If Orange don't bother providing a fix, I wouldn't be surprised. They are old OSes, and both known to have flaky USB [and IR] support - I haved used mobiles with, and upgraded from, both. ME is just a glorified 98 service pack with wdm driver implementation bolted on anyway, and referred to as part of the Win9x group. This is just a rerun of when the Win95 users stayed in the past. What more can I say? That's progress. There's a workaround posted that has been used successfully. My brother's 15-year-old work banger can't be fitted with airbags and doesn't run properly on unleaded... Oh, and if it was a private chat, I would use PM. I may have been chatting to Chris directly, but may wish some other people to see what I have posted. That's the beauty of public messaging systems and my choice I guess... Regards.
Guest Chris b.a.r.f. Posted February 26, 2003 Report Posted February 26, 2003 Yep, Gears is also a good source; any MVP is, they are privy to stuff us mortals aren't and they've proved their worth to the SPV (mobile) community in one way or another.
Guest pete1312 Posted February 26, 2003 Report Posted February 26, 2003 [RN]Max & Chris b.a.r.f. Thanks for your comments guys. Noted & appreciated. PS: I was only joking re the "private chat" :) PPS: I've already done the FR/UK work-around for the Update.
