Guest Pagemakers Posted February 26, 2003 Report Posted February 26, 2003 When will Microsoft be updating their bit of the SPV Smartphone software?
Guest spacemonkey Posted February 26, 2003 Report Posted February 26, 2003 It is unlikely that Microsoft will ever (officially) provide patches to smartphone customers. Smartphone OS is provided by the OEMs on the specific devices they manufacture. That means SPV updates will only come from Orange since they are the device provider. These updates from Orange may include modifications that they have recieved from microsoft. It will be interesting to see how this is handled with future Smartphone OS devices where the device manufacturer is seperate from the network provider (ie when my phone is a samsung and the same handset is available on Vodafone and T-Mobile) presumably in this case updates would come from samsung?
Guest ajb3000 Posted February 26, 2003 Report Posted February 26, 2003 you'll probably end up with seperate updates from both Samsung and your Service Provider.
Guest Pagemakers Posted February 26, 2003 Report Posted February 26, 2003 I hope he doesn't mind me quoting from the Microsoft newsgroup: "New versions of the operating system are in the works, but no announcements have been made. -- Robert Levy Microsoft MVP - Mobile Devices, Smartphone"
Guest Monolithix [MVP] Posted February 26, 2003 Report Posted February 26, 2003 New versions. ie SmartPhone 2003 i would assume...
Guest vampyre69 Posted February 27, 2003 Report Posted February 27, 2003 Just a thought here but if a SP2003 were released then the current S.P will be discontinued?! So after Oranges clawback stock for replacements etc is depleated they will have to issue current equivelants i.e SP2003. They have done this with all phones under Orange Care. If the phone is no longer available and they no longer have stock to replace yours with they will offer you the replacement model or the most similar model. So.... Little Benny has orange care... one morning on the way to work benny dropped his phone... little benny was very upset because his phone had broken... luckily little benny had been paying for his orange care insurance....little benny got himself a shiny new SP2003 phone.
Guest Paul [MVP] Posted February 27, 2003 Report Posted February 27, 2003 Who says SP2003 would not run on the current hardware? P
Guest Rob.P Posted February 27, 2003 Report Posted February 27, 2003 So presumably we woud get SP2003 as an update or would we have to buy it like you would XP if you had 2000. That reminds me, I must sign up for Orange Care :)
Guest spacemonkey Posted February 27, 2003 Report Posted February 27, 2003 It will depend what actually chanegs in 2003. For winCE devices the where an OS update works on a device it's usually a free I think to update. But if Smartphone 2003 changes some assumptions as to what hardware the device will have then it will require a new phone. Also, currently microsoft seems to be leaving it to HTC/Orange to do a fair amount of tweaking to the OS for their specific device, this suggests that updates to new versions of the OS are more likely to be released by the vendor rather than microsoft.
