"Bemused" for SPV anyone?

Hi All,

Has anyone looked into porting Bemused to the SPV? It's a little tool that allows you to control Winamp from a SmartPhone. It was developed for the Nokia 7650.

The original solution involved a bluetooth connection to the PC, but I reckon that it's not that big a deal to replace this with TCP to allow us control of Winamp from the armchair.

Bemused is open-source (GNU). Fingers crossed that someone is looking into this; it would be a great toy to have! :)

Nice idea but, why? Is it to hard to just click around? It would be pointless if we had to be connected to the wired cradle.

I can see Fraser's point - you'd be effectively using the SPV as a remote control for Winamp, but rather than using infra-red, you'd be using your GPRS connection to talk to Winamp over the internet - so you wouldn't need to be anywhere near your PC to change songs.

Alternatively, if your pooter has an infra-red port, I see no reason why an IR remote control app for Winamp (or another program) couldn't be made for the SPV - Orange may have said that the IR port can't be used for TVs and the like, but the difference is that the phone would be communicating via the PC's infra-red, which is obviously supported.

Also, it could be cool at other people's parties to choose the songs YOU like... Or at a net-party!!

I agree, this concept could become a very cool app, anyone able to take on the challenge? p.s. this might be one worth selling for around a fiver. Id pay for it

Really AMO? I don't want to spend my money via GRPS... 3 cents in the USA per kb.

Thats 10x what I pay in DK... and I think what I pay is expensive... LOL!!

Id pay if it supported IR as well as gprs. I work for orange so i get VERY cheap calls and no line rental so i dont mind paying for gprs (discounted rates anyway :) hehe )

It would support IR by default. If you have an ActiveSync connection, and the phone is set up properly, any TCP traffic gets routed over the IR/USB/serial link if available.

So long as the tool uses normal internet TCP/IP to communicate, it should work via any route. You'd need to open your firewall to allow the tool in, if you were using GPRS though. Through IR/USB/serial, you'd already be inside your filewall.

It's one of the reasons I bought this phone! GPRS is too expensive just now! I'm considering buying a very long USB cable...but they have to be be the active repeater type.

I'd love to do this project, but I'm a *nix developer, not Windows. I've taken a look at the SDK and the code just to get a process running is obscene!

Oh, and no one could charge for this tool, unless it was re-written from scratch. The license of the original is GNU, and that prohibits charging for products derived from it.

Oh yeah, I'm a long time user of VNC. I currently use WiFi and a laptop with VNC to control Winamp. The SPV port of VNC is still in early days though.

It's a bit heavy handed for this one though, especially with the small SPV display. It would be much easier to have the controls resident on the SPV, with it sending small messages to the host to control Winamp. Using VNC involves large screen dumps to be transferred. I've done this over a modem before and it is not pleasent! GPRS can only be similar/worse.

I've seen a couple of web-interfaces on winamp.com/plugins that kind-of do what I want. Things would be a lot better (and a neater solution) if there was a small client side app available though. It would be a lot faster and flexible.

Maybe I'll write a page for the SPV in one of these plugins. One of them (can't remember which) allows you to modify the template for the page, so I could make a lite version that looks good for the display we have. I'm pretty busy on non-geeky stuff these days, so I'm not sure when I'll have the time to do this. If I do, details will be posted here.
