WAP connection explained! i think

After posting countless posts and not geting any replies i figured that the only way to figure out this phone was to experiment and experiment.

In order for standard dial up CSD wap to work the in data connection settings for Orange CSD make sure that it says that it connects to the internet NOT WAP network. Otherwise it will not work. THis is probably because in the WAP proxy settings it says that it gets the WAP proxy from the internet and then connects to the WAP network. IF you want to access WAP sites via GPRS then make sure that in the WAP data connection settings you have orange gprs selected.

Now will this mean that when the SPV GPRS bundle promo finishes, we will or we won't be able to switch to the Orange WAP over GPRS bundle (and forget about general GPRS access completely)?

Just if it goes via the Internet, how will they allow us unlimited WAP over GPRS and nothing else?

Personally, I'm still trying to get everything working right so I can use HTML or WAP over GPRS or CSD as I see fit. No joy yet. I think I have managed to get HTML and WAP co-existing over GPRS without having to switch the setting in IE, but I was just testing it all and IE hung on me. :cry:

My guess is that you will be able to switch to just WAP and no GPRS in the future if you wanted to. As to the question of unlimited WAP but no GPRS it's not really the right way of thinking of it.

WAP is charged by dialed up time, so if you are using normal WAP and you use it for an hour they charge you for 1 hour (or take it from your free minutes). When you set up WAP to run through GPRS then it becomes unlimited in the sense that you no longer pay for the minutes you are using it but you will pay for the quantity of WAP information you view because it has now become just another bunch of data coming in via GPRS.

So in the future you can go to a paying GPRS bundle even if you only use it to view WAP sites in which case you will be charged per the data you view or switch to a normal WAP connection at which point you will go back to be charged for minutes connected.

Ta for the reply - yep, got the point of WAP over CSD vs WAP over GPRS, but isn't there an Orange package which gives unlimited WAP over GPRS for £4 a month? One of the add-ons for Your Plan I think - you can select either unlimited WAP or unlimited WAP GPRS for the same price.

Obviously it is pointless right now, but might be nice at the end of the SPV promo package. Then I could buy that and maybe just the 0.5Mb GPRS package and stick to WAP for all my news and gubbins and use the little GPRS I have for anything else.

I was wondering in advance if we'll be able to make use of it.

I can never seem to connect to the wap network at all, either by GPRS or by the dial in wap connection. Would it be possible for someone with a working wap connection (either dial up or over GPRS) to post their settings for ALL their connections including the proxy settings.

Make sure that in Internet explorer settings you have the automatic detect turned off. This causes lots of problems. Hope this helps.

My settings.

Internet connection - OrangeGPRS (connects to internet)

WAP connection - Orange WAP (connects to internet )

with these both html and wap sites should work via GPRS connection

If you wanna access wap via dial up then change the wap settings to orange CSD (connects to internet).

In the IE settings i always leave it with connects to the internet and have auto detect off and it works fine.

A lot of people performed a fix which was mentioned on this forum i think. This only works fine if you use only GPRS and access html sites(i my experience). With my settings i have not had any probs as yet and everything works fine. the downside is that when its in the cradle i have to manually change it to passthrough connection which is a very quick thing to do and not a lot of hassle.
