hi there, has anybody come across any .mod file players for spv... i have a large collection of mod files (mainly chiptunes) but its only a small amount of people know what mods are. there are lots of mod players for winCE and pocket pc.. one of them (modplay) works on SPV, but will not play any files.

come on you clever guys mod file players are so small in size i doubt it would be that hard.. :)

cheers for reading

it would be simple enough to make cos the fmod sources for smartphone are available, it plays mp2/mp3/ogg/aiff/mod/s3m/it.

however, as many in the demoscene know, fmod does not have the greatest of .mod playbacks (i believe winamp uses fmod for its standard mod/xm playback routine, and the oldskool plugin for winamp plays the files back much better)

what would be cool is if the creators of 'bass' would make a smartphone version.

There's a library fmod (www.fmod.org) that plays ogg/mp3/mods/anything. Sounds good and compiles for smartphone. Currently there is no frontend. This could be a good option.

Otherwise if no one else moves on it, I might go look for an opensource pocketpc one and try porting that as my next project after SNES (so I won't be looking at it for a week or 2).

Yeahhh!!!!

Mods on the SPV. Now that would be cool.

Bring it on with Enigma megademo tunes. A bit of Red Sector Incorporated (RSI) especially Wasteland :)

Not forgetting Pugs in Space with its groovy mod. Plus some of the old Amiga game mods. ProjectX, the Lotus Turbo Challenge themes, Lost Patrol, Full Contact, Cannon Fodder War never been so much fun, etc. The list goes on.

Haaaaa!!! Yer cant beat a bit of nostalgia. Wouldn't mind Wasteland as a ringtone. I did resample it from the mod to a wav and compressed it but it sounded really crap ;)

What would be great would be mods as ring tones. Polyphonic? Ha! Midi? We got samples! Wav? Huge files.

Mods would be ideal. Mmmmmm, mod files

Just a quick question for shadieb.

How exactly did you resample the mod file ?

Did you use a proper convertor ? or just a write to wav from Winamp ?

The winamp route is not too good at outputting.

I use modplug tracker, that has an mp3 output on there too.

Sounds quite good, but file sizes get a tad large.

A mod player would be good, a native one so you could play the mods directly as ringtones would be cool, keeps the file sizes down then.

Or possibly an intermediate stage, so that when a ringtone goes to play, an interface cuts in and plays a mod instead, like the crappy tape / cd walkman adapters you used to get for car stereos.

so whos up for porting a mod player (even half decent) cuz at the mo we got none... ;) and using winamp to write mods to wav isnt the best (for spaces sake) on an SPV, i dont think anyone could sort out some mod ringtone player tho, seems a bit too good!

also when people reference "bass" is that bass.dll? that you get with demos and the like?

ahh old skool demos rule, anyone got any for SPV im having a nostalgia trip here. :)

jaknife2000, Cheers for the info, I think I did it via a similar route as yourself. Not sure why it didn't turn out too well.

What I did was I played the Wasteland mod using Modplug player and used the "record what you hear" feature of the Soundblaster Live to record it as a wav file. I then used Droopy Eyes wav compressor to resample it.

It worked okay, but didn't sound half as good as a midi of the Doom Episode 1 Map 1 theme I'd done earlier, virtually the same way but direct from a midi file played in Winamp.

I still like the idea of a mod player for the SPV.

I must be one of the few who can still spend an whole afternoon listening to mods on my PC, some dating back to mid-late eighties when the Amiga was in its baby form :)

I mentioned this before. but might as well again. nice to know people using same programs as me. would be nice to have a modtracker like modplug or madtracker to make music on the go. just a simple one would do me :)

Wasn't it a GREAT time for mods, the 80's.

I remember those days, the Amiga with its original noisetracker, and its 4 channels.

The Octamed, which at the time was a revolution for mods, with 8 channels upwards.

Yes indeed, nostalgia at its best.

I love a good old mod.

The the .xm, .it's started to appear, with the other trackers.

Good times indeed, the Demo's where high, and for nothing more than to prove how good the machine was.

I used to love it, I had one, that was a cool demo, with a remixed version of Coming to America, you guys probably remember it, it had mouths down the bottom that opened and closed with the 4 channels.

Anyway drifting off into cyber history there, yep we NEED a .mod player.

Kinda drifting off topic a bit, but the old Second/Final Reality demo by The Future Crew would be awesome on the SPV.

EDIT [05/03/2003]

New version (0.6) available.

This new version should use less CPU resources.

Adrian

EDIT [04/03/2003]

I have updated MOD Tester (to version 0.5).

Changes

-------

The new version performs better and is more stable (I have tweaked the buffer size and streamlined the code a little).

Menus on selector screen now display properly.

No need to stop before selecting next song (although sometimes fails to play needing an app restart - don't know why this is yet).

Usage

-----

To use it put the player and music in a folder somewhere (phone or storage card) and add a shortcut to the start menu.

Notes

-----

Be aware that it does use all availble CPU on your phone so it sometimes looks like the app is not responding, but be patient and the menu's eventually pop up allowing you to kill the tune etc. Don't try and do anything else at the same time (switching apps, using volume buttons etc.) Also when the phone OS does some background work it may cause the player to stutter.

My phone manages to play the attached MOD (children) without stuttering (just about). Also I noticed songs play better second time round (when cached in memory). Just for comparison, the same file played on my PC (1Ghz Athlon) uses a 10-15% CPU load so this seems wholly expected on an 84mhz ARM.

Post any comments here.

Disclaimer: Download and run this at your own risk. One user reported that an earlier version caused his phone to "Hard Reset", although I have been playing Mods all day on this new version without any problems at all apart from a little stuttering on big files.

Thanks and hope you enjoy.

Adrian

erm, yup, VERY unstable app, had it crash my phone pretty much every time i try it, nothing a quick restart doesnt fix, strange how its reset your whole phone.

anyhoo, try...

hehe, erm, funny this, isnt it for this exact reason orange wanted the phone app locked

back to the player, sounds real bad on my phone, lots of echo, uses shed loads of cpu, plays files incorrectly, but its a start at least, and if anyone wants a nice skin for the mod player then let me know

Sorry to hear this.

This is just the test app (haven't messed arround with it honest!!)

It does completely hog the CPU but nothing a power-cycle shouldn't be able to fix.

I have not had any (permanent) problems on my phone.

I'm not so sure it is unstable, I think it just completely max's out the CPU leaving no power for the phone to do anything else.

I've found that if you let it finish to the end of a song the phone recovers.

Modfather, I'm really sorry (and puzzled) about your phone. Hope you manage to get it sorted out.

As you see, I've added a warning to the post now.

I may do some more work/testing on it next week.

Umm Okay. I might be going blind here but where is the link to download this mod player.

It's been a long day!

Matt

____EDIT_____

That was weird. I just posted this message and it returned me to the forum and now all of the links on the page have appeared! Anyone seen this happen before. I am using opera as my browser, dunno if that has something to do with it.
