Guest spikex Posted February 28, 2003 Report Posted February 28, 2003 It appears that we were mis-led when it came to the new SPVx. According to the Microsoft web-site at http://www.microsoft.com/mobile/smartphone...44&ArtTypeId=21 the SPVx WILL have, "an improved screen, faster processor and more RAM". So it seems people, that this isn't just a cosmetic makeover that we were led to believe originally. Unless Microsoft are wrong then we can expect this new SPV to be alot faster than the ones we have now. But then again a faster processor and more RAM means more energy consumption so it will be interesting to see how they tackle the issues involved in increasing the spec of the SPV hardware. Who knows what else they're going to change.... Spike. MSN Orange SPV
Guest casper508 Posted February 28, 2003 Report Posted February 28, 2003 Imagine 40,000 SPV owners asking for an UPGRADE!! I doubt orange will do that. By the time the contract expires, there'll be other better options around as well.
Guest spikex Posted February 28, 2003 Report Posted February 28, 2003 It is unlikely that their will be 40,000 SPV owners who want the upgrade. From what I've read around the web and people I've talked to, theirs a large community of SPV Owners who are happy with their current SPV. And Orange usually do allow upgrades to new phones anyway - for a charge. You don't necessarily have to wait for the contract to be over or at the end of a contract to pick a new phone.
Guest DJHope Posted February 28, 2003 Report Posted February 28, 2003 This makes me laugh! Why would orange do that? Its not like when you buy a phone their is a clause that says "if their is ever an advance in technology, we will automatically give you the latest most powerful handset"! It happens all the time you buy something and something better comes out the next day, your not being ripped off this is simply the way the world works its called advancing, if we didnt advance wed still be stuggling with the wheel. DJ Hope
Guest spikex Posted February 28, 2003 Report Posted February 28, 2003 Why does it make you laugh. Go to the Orange.co.uk web-site and go to the Phones section. Theirs normally a button for clicking on Upgrade or New Contract....is it really that funny? And I never said that their was a clause in the Orange contract saying that Orange would give us a new phone as soon as it comes out. I said you can probably upgrade to one. Make sure you don't make assumptions by what people write...and read a little bit more carefully next time.mate.
Guest DJHope Posted February 28, 2003 Report Posted February 28, 2003 Yeh but my point is this poll is silly, why would orange say, "special price for just SPV customers" their not exactly recalling SPVs, its never going to happen, youll never be able to upgrade SPV->SPVx other than full normal upgrade price, so i find its sugestion funny!
Guest spikex Posted February 28, 2003 Report Posted February 28, 2003 Did I say that their is going to be a special price for SPV owners? I said, "what would be a reasonable price for an upgrade from an SPV to an SPVx?" I take it this forum is full of SPV owners or am I mistaken??? The question I am asking is what would current SPV Owners pay to upgrade to an SPVx? Yet again it's the twisting of the words.
Guest neilfenstein Posted February 28, 2003 Report Posted February 28, 2003 I would pay £100 to keep my contract and ugrade to an SPVx if it is faster and has more ram. I love my spv, but to have a sleeker faster more powerful sexy version would be even better. I dont want to have to port my number, start a new contract end the one im on now etc. to get this fone. In fact if it was that much effort id keep the one i have. But if orange had an arrangement with the quick uptakers (us), so we as a whole could continue to better the life of the SPV/SPVx(games, apps, tools, xmls, homescreens, sounds etc) I think we and orange could benefit. More interest & more sales = more reason to develope and upgrade!!
Guest chloe Posted February 28, 2003 Report Posted February 28, 2003 I would say that under these circumstances Orange should give us some sort of compensation for the grief that we had to go through when the SPV was first launched. The software was too rushed. The companion CD was a let down as well....was expecting lots of ringtones, backdrop, skins, software, games, etc.
Guest muude Posted February 28, 2003 Report Posted February 28, 2003 I've seen on the british Orange site that you can already switch your old phone and a little cash for a new one. Haven't seen it for the SPVx though....
Guest dunlo_a Posted February 28, 2003 Report Posted February 28, 2003 I wouldn't advise upgrading whilst still in the original contract as you will have to pay an upgrade fee PLUS the price of the new handset which is alway more expensive than a new connection as the dealer does not recieve as much in commision. Orange have just revised their upgrade fees which of course aren't in favour of the consumer. On a lighter note (well not much lighter) as mentioned on another thread the GPRS £6 - 10meg cap option will be no more. Orange does have a GPRS tariff that is known as "all you can eat" - this is £1 per meg but is only available to business customers. Anyone out there who works for a company may some how have a nice boss who is willing to add it on his company as a work phone and pay for it. You could then pay them back once you receive the bill.
Guest Richie M Posted March 1, 2003 Report Posted March 1, 2003 *sigh* Please read Other posts before posting. http://www.modaco.com/viewtopic.php?t=4219 Has already discussed this, Processor and RAM is the same, only difference is Screen and Buttons. What is the point of this Poll? I havent bothered to check the Results but surely everyone is gonna click £0!
Guest spikex Posted March 1, 2003 Report Posted March 1, 2003 Yes but does that post have a Poll? No! Don't believe everything you read apparently...so why believe any of the stuff on this forum?
Guest awarner [MVP] Posted March 1, 2003 Report Posted March 1, 2003 Play nice all :) everyone has their own opinion and we must respect that. have fun ;)
Guest mcwarre Posted March 1, 2003 Report Posted March 1, 2003 Ladies & Gents, Orange will not offer SPV owners 'special' upgrade prices. (as opposed to a normal upgrade price) Example: I had an Ericsson T68. I asked to upgrade it to a T68i. Of course I could if I paid the full upgrade price (as if I was upgrading from say a Nokia 3210). Of course I took my T68 to a dealer and they flashed the ROM to upgrade the software (but not the looks) to T68i. Since done the decent thing and got an SPV.......
Guest 15 yr old Posted March 1, 2003 Report Posted March 1, 2003 i think we should get a free upgrade to the spvx, or a cheap upgrade.................
Guest Gorskar Posted March 1, 2003 Report Posted March 1, 2003 It would be nice, but its not going to happen Orange have no obligation or desire to take back all our old SPVs and replace them with new SPVx's. Whats in it for Orange to do that? Just because something newer comes out doesnt mean you get a free upgrade to it. Thats the reality of the technological world: theres always something newer and better released soon after you buy anything. Microsoft dont give free upgrades to winXP just because people bought win2000, Car manufacturers dont give you their latest model, just because you bought the previous model soon before the new one was released, etc etc etc. Live with it.
Guest chloe Posted March 2, 2003 Report Posted March 2, 2003 I think what Spikex was trying to put across is that we will be able to upgrade to the new SPV. He doesn't mean give it to us for free, or give it to us for a considerable discount but he's saying just through a normal upgrade. I think alot of people have mis-interpreted what this post was about. All he's asking is how much would you pay for the upgrade itself!
Guest Hax Posted March 2, 2003 Report Posted March 2, 2003 I think that a lot ofthe problem is that some current owners of SPV's feel like Orange have been using them as part of their development team - the part that tests the products before they are ready for release. Sometimes I do feel that way too and yes I would like to be able to upgrade at a preferential rate because of that feeling. But it just ain't gonna happen - as for upgrading your phone with Orange, they don't give a monkey's about what phone you currently have when it comes to upgrading - they charge a flat handset upgrade fee that is supposed to be the just the cost of the handset, with an additional fee if you haven't completed your 12 month contract with them! As for technology moving on, this is obviously not the reason for the SPVx coming out - it's more a case of Orange listening to the feedback of the customer's who currently own a SPV and then trying to address some of the main causes of trouble - keypad too fiddley (new keypad), battery life too short (new "transflective" screen which will allow the screen to be more visible in daylight conditions with less backlight) and finally, phone crashing/other bugs (new software without a doubt!). BTW: When I say "new" transflective screen, O would have known about this screen for a long time - it's takes LCD manufacturers quite a while to finsh the processes for a new display and they are always keen to make sure that their customers are aware of the options. Also, they generally design their screens to be footprint and connection compatable with their previous versions. There is no way the SPV should have been released in the state is was, IMHO it was still deep into it's beta phase and Orange were far too desparate to be the first to market with a MS Smartphone and so rushed it through and cut a LOT of corners - that's obvious. However, the phone sold because there are people like me and the rest of you guys who can't wait to get their hands on the latest and greatest technology and that (I'm guessing) is the main factor why the SPV was rushed through and released in such a shabby way. At the end of the day, we've all got a phone with far more features than any of us had before and at a reasonable, subsudised price - personally, I got mine for free on OVP - O2 100 (I hear that phone subsidising is to finish in the not too distant futre - is this correct?) Whatever price you paid, you have got an awful lot of technology for the money. So long as O and MS keep the software updates coming for the current SPV then I'll be happy. Although I'd be even more happy if they'd remove the application lock permanently - my phone just turned it's app lock back on :) Anyway, enough of my babbling on (that's my £10 worth!) Hax
