IRDA GPRS Connection with Orange SPV Phone and Windows XP Pro:

==================================================

©2003 nIKnAK5 for MODACO.com

***** The SPV must be Updated.. as if you haven't! ******

1. Install Microsoft Active Sync 3.6

2. Point the SPV Phone at the IRDA on the Laptop, and on the Orange phone select

  PROGRAMS - ACCESSORIES - (4) MODEM LINK

3. Select the IrCOMM Connection and then Press the MENU button and select ACTIVATE

(make sure that phone is pointing at the laptops IRDA, DO NOT press Done!)

4. Windows XP will automaticall install (NO DRIVERS REQUIRED!) a Modem called

Standard Modem over IRLINK will be added (A sound will eventually indicate this!)

5. Select: START MENU / CONTROL PANEL / PHONE AND MODEM OPTIONS

6. Select: Standard modem over IRLINK / Select PROPERTIES

7. Select: ADVANCED MENU and enter the initialisation string:

  +cgdcont=1,"IP","orangeinternet","",0,0

8. Goto Windows XP Network Connections and create a new network connection

9. Select: CONNECT TO THE INTERNET / SETUP MY CONNECTION MANUALLY /

CONNECT USING DIAL UP MODEM / TICK: Standard Modem over IRLINK

10. For the Connection name enter: GPRS

11. For the Phone number enter: *99#

12. Leave all three entires blank for user/pass/domain and Untick all three boxes

13. Select: Finish

14. The Connection Window should now pop up, click DIAL

15. You will then be registered to the connection and then you can start using

your SPV Phone as a GPRS Modem.

NOTE:

It can take a while for it to initialise/open the port.

Also make sure that Network DialUp connection is using the new IRDA Modem!!

You can increase the properties for the connection above 115200 in the Dial Up.

It seems to reset when re-activated.  IRDA Device only goes upto 152000!!

It may be possible to run the firewall on the connection, not tested.

Stupid question, but I haven't yet found a definite answer - does the IR modem work at all on Win '98 (1st edition - not ME or 2nd ed)? I haven't got anywhere with it so I guess it doesn't, but I don't know if there's a driver anywhere?

Will:

Forgive me for questioning this, but should your signature now show that you HAVE updated?

I forgive you, at time of posting I had not updated (hence could check it does not work on an un-updated?)

However Now I have updated!! Wooh.. er ish!

Many thanks for your forgiveness :)

Personally, I think it would aid this site lots if folks used similar type "signatures" to ours. There are currently far too many threads offering solutions to far too many problems.

Whilst I appreciate that all advice here is given with the best of intentions, it nevertheless is not always the correct advice for those of us with outdated OS, i.e. Win 98/SE/ME.

You only have to try the Orange UK Update to see what I mean!!

Firstly, thanks to Will for the post.

I am having problems connecting using the IR Port. Simply WinXP Pro doesn't detect the SPV when I hold it near the Port. I have followed the steps above so I am sure that its a problem with the IR port. I say this because it hasn't detected other IR devices.

I looked in the device manager and it told me that there are no conflicts and that the device is working properly. I updated the hardware drivers for the IR port and it still doesn't work.

I have also updated using the french update.

Has anyone had this problem before and perhaps fixed it? Or has anyone any ideas.

Thanks.

If you're still using Windows 95, 98, 98SE, or ME then you should upgrade by now...Microsoft are slowly phasing out support for these operating systems. It's already happened to 95 and I believe 98 is coming soon. Support for ME will be around for a while longer but systems that can run XP now are sooo cheap (£400+) or if you already got a decent set up then just buy XP Pro....notice how Orange didn't release a 95,98 or ME update? It said on their web-site that you should have the follow.... and it only showd XP and 2000. Not even a mention of support for older operating systems made it on their.

Some people like Win ME etc the only reason I use XP is because I was forced to when I

bought my new laptop. All my other systems run ME and 98SE.

Why should I have to upgrade because microsoft tell me to?

I have never had many problems with older OS unless it was my own stupid doing.

Why fix something if it ain't broke. :)

Not a personal attack spikex just my view as to why should I have to upgrade etc.

FYI, the Orange Update site DID originally include reference to Win 98/SE/ME. They "updated" that site the day AFTER the Update came out (by deleting reference to 98/SE/ME)!

When I bought my SPV, there was never any warning that it would only be supported under later OS's!

Both my PC's are less than 18 months old and I feel that I have been let down badly by Orange

I tried the settings, at the beginning of this post, on my Casio EM500 PocketPC and it works via GPRS - Cool!

A mate tried the same on his Compaq iPaq - after some tweeking he got it to work also.

Internet is better on a slightly larger screen using a stylus on the Pocket PC.

I've been trying with Win2K as well. In desperation I consulted the help files  and found this....

The remote device is running IrCOMM.

Infrared devices using IrCOMM can't communicate with Windows 2000.

Looks like its a limitation of Win2K, someone please prove me otherwise.
