Yes, but what you are suggesting is insurance fraud. And that ain't right no matter how you look at it

You can get a replacement based upon the dust under the screen.

You can also get a replacement if there are any other warranty problems.

To be quite honest i find the idea of changing the phone because it has a few scratches and dust under the screen a bit obscene. If you wanna go pay for a new one if it bothers you that much, then fine, but if you want it to be as good as new when you first bought it, put it in a box to never use it. Dust is a hassle, but when i buy something, i hardly expect it to be in out of the box condition 6 months later. Especially with something used/abused as much as a phone. Replace it on insurance if it gets stolen or actually breaks.

But please STOP bumping up my premium just because you want a shiny new handset. Chances are it won't be shiny and new anyway because it will be a re-conditioned handset. Insurance fraud pisses me off, it cost me over £200 to insure the electrical stuff in my flat this year, and i'm a student.

Orange Care premium hasn't changed afaik for a while, if it ever has, and is still very very cheap for the quality of the service provided.

If you claim on warranty, it technically shouldn't affect your insurance policy AT ALL, as it's Orange's fault a problem exists in the first place.

It's fair enough to ask for fraud to be avoided, but go ahead and make a warranty claim on the dust, that's what you've paid for.

The SPV is definitely more liable to damage than any of the other phones I've had - my last t39 was still in close-to-new condition when I dumped it 12 months later. The SPV was worse after just a month.

And remember, most people have just received their third month bills, so having had the phone for just a quarter of the time and already experiencing such heavy wearing down can be annoying.

Oh and one final thing.

You're legally entitled to a handset that was as shiny/new as your previous one.

When Orange say reconditioned, they replace the external parts and keep the internals rather than vice-versa. This ensures that all shipped recon units are "as new". I've had three warranty replacements, and one on the insurance, and all but one have been perfect handsets, which had a dodgy screen and constitutes one of the replacements.

Isn't it £5 a month these days? That's what i was led to believe. Whenever i've had a re-con handset, it's definately never been new, maybe you've been getting lucky and getting new ones becuase so there are so few re-cons yet. BUT i don't really care if my replacement has knocks and scratches, becuase the one it's replacing did, and i'm just glad i have a phone that works again. Believe me i've had a lot of re-con handsets, so i'm hardly Mr non-claimant. I just claim when i need to.

I got my old 6210 replaced with an 8310 last time ;) - infrared port stopped working and O were out of 6210's.... So, phoned up next day to complain about battery being loose on my missus' phone and randomly switching off because of it (O confirmed this was a known fault) and she too got a nice shiny new 8310

Now that's not fraud, that's just expecting your phone to work and last for at least a year (only had the 6210's for about eight months!)

As far as dust under the screen goes, I wouldn't expect that mainly because the SPV is a sealed unit and you are not allowed to take it apart for cleaning - that would void your warranty. So, I think that there is no reason why a claim cannot be made under these circumstances - especially if it is affecting your use of the product. It is far from insureance fraud.

And as for it costing your £200 for insurance, just for the electrical stuff, you are either a very rich student being able to afford lots of high priced electrical equipment (in which case stop whinging) or you are being ripped off. Although I am not a student, I've got unlimited cover on my household contents for around about £9 a month (a shade over £100 a year) - max single item value being £1000 - more than enough for most things! I would suggest you look harder for insurance next year :)

Yes mate, by all means deliberately drop it in some water if that's what you feel like doing with it. Just don't dream of trying to claim for it. I'm in the insurance industry and it's people like you who keep hiking my own premiums up.

I'm watching you

PS: Try the vacuum cleaner method posted elsewhere, or at least keep the phone in it's (provided) case!

If it helps, the screen scratches can be buffed out using a soft cloth with some Brasso on it.

I agree with you Hax - that's not fraud at all, that's a fault which should be claimed on! Also now having looked yes, the dust is covered, i never said it wasn't, i just think it's a bit silly to change your phone because of it. I've tryed the hoover method myself, seemed to work ok. The bit i was annoyed with was the "what's the best way to claim, drop it in some water or something?" which clearly is fraud.

I'm not a rich student, i worked extremely hard for all the stuff that i own, (including the SPV) and i don't think £200 is a menial amount to be whinging about even if i was. If you have a problem with that then i suggest you are very rich. I have not found a policy yet that covers hifi/home cinema seperates as different items, only as the single item value. In that respect, maybe i am being ripped off, but i'm not gonna leave my ass exposed if someone decides to rob me. If you can point me to a policy that will replace single items not under a generic heading, be my guest. Computer stuff is also usually covered under a single item, and £1000 is not even close to replacing that. £200 was quite a steal given some of the offers i had. I don't want to make enemies over this one, i just want to get my opinion across. We're all entitled to that aren't we?

The method of the vacuum cleaner doesn't to anything at all. You really must not use your SPV at all in order not to have dust under the screen!

I just can't understand how stupid some men can be... (HTC fire.gif )

oh it seems that claiming on insurance isnt a very popular way of gettin a new fone!

as far as im concerned i pay for my insurance, therefore i expect to be able to use it!

theres a worse thing i cud do, which i wudnt do obviously, fake a robery of the fone, keep it and sell it on ebay for £££'s now thats sly lol!

tomdbomb61: as far as Orange are concerned, there's not a great deal of difference between the two.

Fraud is Fraud at the end of the day.
