Guest spacemonkey Posted March 1, 2003 Report Posted March 1, 2003 Here it is: http://www.davemoller-nz.demon.co.uk/PocketSNES.exe READ THIS POST FULLY BEFORE PLAYING... 1-Load it anywhere on your phone 2-Put ROM files with extensions *.fig and *.smc in the same directory as the exe 3-Run it 4-At the main menu pick tools 'Load Rom' and it will give you a list of ROMs to pick from. The game should then run. Controls are joystick for directions then some buttons seem to be action button, left softkey, 1 and maybe 2... just try things... I didn't set them up, it's just what worked by default :) Pressing voice record will pause your game and return you to the menu. WARNING, when you pause the graphics at the menu will look ALL SCREWED UP. It's working fine, it's just the picture that's a mess. Use the menu to Resume, Reset, or Exit. The emulator currently doesn't save games in any form. This will be added soon. So for now, each time you run a game it will be right from the start... From here, I am gonna work through adjusting options etc, making it configurable controls, the works. Please don't post here excessive, "How do I do X?" type questions. If you can't get it working then just wait for a later version, or maybe read the gnuboy threads cos I'm sure problems will be similar. If a ROM doesn't work, try a different ROM. Definitely runs with micromachines and that's all I've tested. Please don't post "Wouldn't feature X be cool" posts. There are a lot of features already implemented in here that I have just switched off to get the thing working in the first place. Wait for the next few versions as I put these back in. Have fun... I expect it will be quite slow... probably not much I can do about this, but I'm gonna investigate what options I can change that might help. Later all
Guest okocha10 Posted March 1, 2003 Report Posted March 1, 2003 still triying 2 work the gameboy 1,but if this pocketSNES works then its dreamland!!!!! :)
Guest TheDillyYo Posted March 2, 2003 Report Posted March 2, 2003 :) Like I said b4  U IZ DA DAPPA DON!! 8) Awsome!! A little slow like you say but tis a start... Guest gideonnorel Posted March 2, 2003 Report Posted March 2, 2003 spacemonkey ya is absolute gem. SNES on SPV. well cool. if microsoft and orange put this amout of effort to make software for the SPV we'd be in dreamland. cheers geeza.
Guest fumaras Posted March 2, 2003 Report Posted March 2, 2003 Great job Spacemonkey ;) :D i test some snes roms and it's ok  (just the problem of speed, it's very slow  ). You know the problem: it's very slow due to the ARM720 processor of the SPV and is standard limited Mhz. I think here, ARM code can't make speed (and sound!!!) become ok with actual SPV. The solution (if possible) will probably come with overclock of the SPV else, only next future generation of Smartphone processor (much better speed) can make PocketSnes speed (and sound) ok. I hope you'll continue the devellopment (and option) of this great Snes emulator :) .
Guest kingdom master Posted March 2, 2003 Report Posted March 2, 2003 very cool ,welldone, shame about the speed. but maybe we can impove that in time, the controls arent very spaced out but all in all, WOW!!!!!!! BIG UP!!THANKYOU SO MUCH!!!!!!!!!!! :)
Guest RCAM Posted March 2, 2003 Report Posted March 2, 2003 You guys must realize that there is not much that can be done to increase speed. Spacemonkey is doing his best and does well. Fumaras overclocking is not the answer, the battery dies fast enough. What we have to do is instead of emulating the processer the SNES uses, we have to translate the machine code on the fly from the SNES processer instructions to STONGARM instructions. Then we will be able to run at full speed just as the Palm emus do.
Guest DaveR Posted March 2, 2003 Report Posted March 2, 2003 RCAM, that would be an enourmous amount of work! Dave [email protected] http://www.linuxlinks.com/
Guest akarno Posted March 2, 2003 Report Posted March 2, 2003 This is a difficult message to write because I do not wish to be critical in any way. I think spacemonkey has done a fantastic job in getting this emulator working on the SPV. However I am not sure if it is worth it, except maybe as an intellectual exercise. I have tried several ROMs and have got a few to work. I have the following running. Sonic the hedgehog Super Ghosts & Goblins FZERO Micromachines In particular Super Ghosts & Goblins and Sonic look fantastic but I would say all the games are unplayable because of speed. I appreciate that there is little that can be done about this in the short term, which is why I am suggesting it may not be worth continuing. I raise this as a discussion point to see if others agree or if I am completely out of tune with general feeling. Spacemonkey has done a fantastic job providing software for the SPV and all I am trying to do is ensure he is doing stuff that people want, which I am sure is what he is trying to do. Speaking personally, I would rather he spent his time on improving GNUBOY rather than improving the SNES emulator, but maybe he and others have a different opinion.
Guest spacemonkey Posted March 2, 2003 Report Posted March 2, 2003 Akarno... I definitely agree with the sentiment. I will however continue work on pocketsnes at least to the point where all the major features that it allready contains run and are useable. Yes, it is for most purposes really too slow, however the same emulator with 0 changes will work on all future smartphone 2002 devices, so at the moment it is more of a curiosity and brief amusement but not really useable, I would hope that when we start seeing new hardware come out, that the perfromance will start to become acceptable on that hardware. As to, spending more time on gnuboy... it is usefull to do more than one thing at a time, for instance I cleaned up a couple of assumptions in the rom picker code and hid the menu buttons during play in gnuboy specifically based on work that I was doing to get pocketSnes going.
Guest alkis_y3k Posted March 2, 2003 Report Posted March 2, 2003 Wow, it actually works.. Every game I tested, it worked! Well, except for FF3 which didn't start. I have noticed that every game runs at the same speed, so you might want to use this information to find the speed problem. Also, I have a feeling that the game screen is stretched to the top and the letters are shown well. You might want to try to work around that. GOOD JOB MAN! Keep it up!
Guest agent.m Posted March 2, 2003 Report Posted March 2, 2003 nice one. propper sensible soccer on my phone. has anyone figured out all the keys yet?
Guest kingdom master Posted March 2, 2003 Report Posted March 2, 2003 great stuff roms tested so far and wroking are street fighter 2 alittle slow, f zero pga tour golf nigel mansell super soccer mario world good speed mario kart doesnt work yet! nice work:-)
Guest stillwaiting Posted March 2, 2003 Report Posted March 2, 2003 All I can say is WOW!!!!! Mario Kart on the spv- even though its slow its still a dream come true Can i just make a suggestion, it would be nice if you could add.........just kidding! Fantastic work Spacemonkey, your dedication to the Spv never ceases to amaze me. Keep it up, and any problems from your better half about spending too much time at your pc just let us know, we'll swamp her with so many complimentary e-mails she won't know whats hit her.
Guest Thurstan Posted March 2, 2003 Report Posted March 2, 2003 Wow Sensible Soccer on SPV! Coooool! I'm tempted to use this release, but I'm probably gonna wait for future releases. Nice one Spacemonkey!
Guest awarner [MVP] Posted March 2, 2003 Report Posted March 2, 2003 Found a sort of bugglitch the auto lock function seems to kick in and the screen goes crazy a bit of home screen here and snes there etc. if you press unlock you get the unlock screen for about 0.5 sec but if you type your password in anyway, everything sort of returns to normal.
Guest amo Posted March 2, 2003 Report Posted March 2, 2003 Well this is great stuff. The way Im looking at it is people like Spacemonkey are making the smartphone platform the os to have on a phone. With all these great apps i for one am looking forward to the newer microsoft smartphones that will come out over the next year or so, because if I know i can have snes and gameboy emus on it, its gonna be a great phone! So heres to Spacemonkey and others alike for making the Smartphone platform, the OS to have. (Symbian, who needs it!)
Guest kingdom master Posted March 2, 2003 Report Posted March 2, 2003 now my prayers have been answered i have a snes emu, thankyou spacemonkey! i will always stick with os phone apart from getting a 3g handset. i look forward to either a overclock app for the spv or! a faster processor smartphone. i think that the spv will become some kind of legend in the mobile scene in years to come. i think the development may also follow it. kingdom.
Guest amo Posted March 3, 2003 Report Posted March 3, 2003 Did mario kart work cos i thought it used some special chip
Guest stillwaiting Posted March 3, 2003 Report Posted March 3, 2003 I got it to work on mine but it was very slow indeed to the point that its unplayable. Hopefully future releases of the emu should help with that. I have to add, just seeing those little fellas lined up on the grid was enough to satisfy me.

If i could program id dedicated a lot of my time to the cause :)
Guest DJ WATTS Posted March 7, 2003 Report Posted March 7, 2003 Nice work spacemonkey you are to be thanked for your obvious talent and interest in the SPV scene!! ;) I cant wait for what other ideas or plans you have in mind for the SPV and what else you can do with this emu. :) Well done mate!!
Guest spacemonkey Posted March 7, 2003 Report Posted March 7, 2003 Just a quick update on the status of PocketSNES... I have done a bit of playing around with options such as frameskipping etc. It seems that these are not going to give us much in the way of performance gains. So the prognossis (sp?) for this emulator is that it is unlikely to get much faster on the SPV. I will be coming back to it and tidying up the screens/interface/adding landscape mode, but I wouldn't expect this for at least a couple of weeks. Currently I am very busy on other things (like life and work) and also, coding wise I am working on some major changes to GNUBoy that will hopefully make it full speed on SPV, so I am doing that before any more work on PocketSNES. Later all.
