Guest jas1970 Posted March 2, 2003 Report Posted March 2, 2003 after internet explorer has loaded a page, the gprs connection disconnects, anyone help here?
Guest martin Posted March 2, 2003 Report Posted March 2, 2003 What do you mean by GPRS disconnection ? With GPRS you are not given a dedicated channel that requires connection and disconnection, you are simply given access to the GPRS network after which you send and receive data at will. GPRS is always on. You are charged by the amount of data that is exchanged and not be any length of time (unlike voice calls) After you load an internet page, are you being prevented from any further GPRS activity?
Guest jas1970 Posted March 2, 2003 Report Posted March 2, 2003 Overlooked my settings. The idle disconnection settings were set to none as default, thats why it disconnected after loading a page.
Guest martin Posted March 2, 2003 Report Posted March 2, 2003 Gotcha. A disconnect from the Internet. Not a disconnect from GPRS itself.
Guest tomdbomb61 Posted March 2, 2003 Report Posted March 2, 2003 jey jas how do you set the disconnect idle time becuase mine does that too, loads a page then disconnects, then has to redial everytime u want to load anything else, thanks tom
Guest zenabi Posted March 3, 2003 Report Posted March 3, 2003 I'm not jas, but goto Settings - Data Connections. Now click the Menu softkey (right softkey) and select Options. The option you want is under Idle disconnect after:. Note: The value None does not mean Never.
Guest tomdbomb61 Posted March 3, 2003 Report Posted March 3, 2003 so what does the value none mean then? tj
Guest strathclydezero Posted March 3, 2003 Report Posted March 3, 2003 The SPV is not 'always on'. It connects and disconnects from the internet when you request a page. The G in the centre of your screen at the top is merely an indication that a GPRS signal is available. When you request a page it 'dials' onto the GPRS network, and the idle time you talk of is simply the time it pings to keep an idle connection open. This is proven quite simply. If you are downloading data and you get an incoming voice call it cannot reach the phone. The person calling you gets diverted to your voicemail or they get an engaged tone. If you are sitting 'idle' the phone is merely pinging the server to keep the connection open so assuming the call is not perfectly timed with a ping then the GPRS connection will cease and the voice call will come to your handset. It is for this reason that I have my GPRS set to drop quite quickly when it is idle. I've also had calls going to my voicemail when I'm in an idle msn session. The SPV is miles from an 'always on' handset.
Guest zenabi Posted March 4, 2003 Report Posted March 4, 2003 so what does the value none mean then? tj It means as soon as there is no data being transferred the phone will cut your connection. strathclydezero: When streaming media, calls still get through to me meaning my GPRS connection must be cancelled regardless of it being idle or not...
