Guest ben_341 Posted March 2, 2003 Report Posted March 2, 2003 Hi all, I got my SPV on Thursday, and since then I have been having problems connecting to GPRS. I have been in contact with the Orange UK wireless helpdesk and they have had to contact their second line support for investigation, but they say I may have to wait 7 days to get a response, and I'd like it fixed sooner if possible! So here goes.. the G icon for available is there. The G on the signal indicator appears upon connection attempt, however, after about 5 seconds or so the phone always returns an error saying "connection error - unable to place call" I called Orange Friday morning - they say GPRS wasn't activated on my account yet, they would do it now, I would get 2 sim update messages, read, delete and reboot - did that. Apparently from this point it takes up to 24hrs for it to work (wasn't told this though at that time) Friday night I updated the software on the phone to the latest UK service pack, phone works better - gprs still doesn't. Friday evening about 9pm I call Orange, the guy takes me througyh the GPRS connection settings, the DNS entries were missing so we put in the pri and sec dns addresses. However, he thinks that the sim hasn't been updated yet as I have no options under secure wap. He says I should have 2 options I can select under this connection type and this would happen once the sim has been updated. He asked me to wait until the Sat morning for the 24hrs to be up from the first call. Sat evening I call Orange - still not working - same error. She goes through a few things - seems rather confused why it won't work. She suggests disabling GPRS on my account and re-enabling it 2 hours later. Did this - 2 hours after the call I get the sim updates - read, delete etc etc. Tonight, still not working! called Orange, rebooted phone bla bla bla, he has to log a case for tech support to investigate it. I have tried with full battery and signal still no luck. I get 2 - 3 bar signal in my house. Please could someone help? GPRS is one of the main reasons I bought the phone!. Regards, Ben
Guest martin Posted March 2, 2003 Report Posted March 2, 2003 The G shows that the GPRS network is being detected by the phone. The problem is likely to be access rights to the GPRS network which are administered by Orange and is held in the network itself. There may be problem updating your subscriber records ? (or this part of it could just be delayed ) If you have receieved a SIM update then you may find the service appear within a couple of days. Hold on till then. If still nothing... Test your phone with another GPRS enabled SIM. If you can make a GPRS call, your phones setup fine. Do you have a local Orange shop. Maybe they could help ? (be persuasive)
Guest ben_341 Posted March 2, 2003 Report Posted March 2, 2003 I was considering going into the Orange shop yesterday when I was out doing some shopping, few miles from me though, decided against it thinking that they would just fob me off. I will try the sim swap thing tomorrow, I have jornada 928 at work with a GPRS sim in, will stick that in my SPV tomorrow and see what happens. Unfortunatly, I suspect your correct with the access rights on the network theory, however, I was hoping I'd overlooked something with me being new to the device. Thanks for the response. Ben.
Guest ben_341 Posted March 2, 2003 Report Posted March 2, 2003 It is. The phone is unlocked anyway. The Jornada connects with it ok bit temperamental but I suppose that is to be expected. I may try the Jornada with my sim also.
Guest ben_341 Posted March 3, 2003 Report Posted March 3, 2003 all works fine with another GPRS enabled sim, will just have to wait until Orange get their act together and properly enable it on my account!
Guest dc Posted March 4, 2003 Report Posted March 4, 2003 I had a very similar problem when I bought my SPV about 5 weeks ago. Constant phone calls to Orange were just wasting my time because I kept getting told that everything was fine at Oranges side. "It must be my settings!" I was told on numerous occasions. At one point I mentioned to the chap on the other end of the phone that perhaps it wasn't set up properly at their end. I was promptly told "Look sir, I do this job every day helping customers, I think I know what I am talking about!!!". He obviously DIDN'T!!! My call eventually got passed to Technical Support after about a week of daily phone calls. A week and half later I got a call. The problem was this : When I purchased my phone I was set up on the GPRS node in the area of the shop. However, The area that I live and work from comes under a different node. Usually when they set you up it is with a roaming node, so that your connection information used by the GPRS nodes follows you everywhere you go. Mine had been set as static in the town I had bought the phone which meant as soon as I left that nodal area and went to a new area my phones GPRS was useless. Since this was changed I have had no problems whatsoever and all is great.
