Guest tomdbomb61 Posted March 2, 2003 Report Posted March 2, 2003 hey im after any hands on experience from people who have got, or are using a P800, how does it compare to the SPV? i know there are other topics under this similar title, but i am not interested in 2nd hand chat about tech specs, i am wanting some hands on opinions on how good it is thanks tom
Guest Paul [MVP] Posted March 2, 2003 Report Posted March 2, 2003 I can tell you - the input methods suck. No T9, and the handwriting recognition only recognises individual letters at once. P
Guest Thurstan Posted March 2, 2003 Report Posted March 2, 2003 I've had a play - seems to me more likea PDA than a phone... it depends what you want and I want a phone. The fact the SPV does other stuff is a massive bonus!
Guest tomdbomb61 Posted March 2, 2003 Report Posted March 2, 2003 could i use my SPV promo pack, free GPRS till end of April on the P800?
Guest Paul [MVP] Posted March 2, 2003 Report Posted March 2, 2003 That's probably the best way to sum it up - SPV is a phone with a PDA, P800 is a PDA with a phone. P
Guest yatpeak Posted March 3, 2003 Report Posted March 3, 2003 "]I can tell you - the input methods suck. No T9, and the handwriting recognition only recognises individual letters at once. P I don't agree with you about the input, I find T9 doesn't recognise a lot of words when I use it, and I find it faster to type the letters in manually. I think that the handwriting recognition has to be one of the best features of the P800. Also, it's application unlocked and you get some reasoable games on the CD and even more available as free downloads. Though I still think the SPV is better... :) Wyatt
Guest mantrac Posted March 3, 2003 Report Posted March 3, 2003 So, I went into an Orange store on Saturday and asked to have a go at a P800... It's a lovely PDA. Easy to use interface and more than anything, VERY VERY RESPONSIVE! Especially when you compare it to my deaf SPV that needs everything to be pressed twice and requires a pause every now and then for that all important hourglass breather... The P800, is however a PDA with phone capabilities and not the opposite... It is by no means anywhere close to the SPV in terms of one-hand usability and the lack of keypad can at times be annoying... It has an attachable keypad that has limited functionality and takes forever to clip on... The person at the store took almost a minute to remove the cover for the keyboard slot and then another agonising 30 seconds to put the keyboard on... Even then, the amount of stuff one can do with the snap-on keypad are pretty restricted (SMS, basic menu access etc.) Even the stylus itself (tiny for those who have shaky hands or like a pint or two) is awkward when it comes to detaching it from the device and long nails are required to do the job quickly. On the other hand, the P800 is not as uncomfortably large as I thought it was (I think it looks bigger on camera) and I could easily carry it around. The camera preview is real-time (as opposed to the SPV's turtle) and the overall responsiveness of the system is amazing. The browser "eats" websites as quickly as your desktop IE does (v.fast rendering) and has no problem scrolling through them. The larger screen also means less left-right scrolling. The handwriting recognition was very good but of course the lack of T9 for keypad text entry is a minus. Would I buy one??? Well, the P800 is nothing new. The XDA from O2 can do the same things (minus built-in camera), has almost the same size (it's actually slimmer) and has been around for much longer. If I wanted a PDA with an antenna, I'd get one... If you ask me though, there's no case for comparison between an SPV and the P800. Two different things for two different markets... You can always increase the features of a smartphone by getting dangerously closer to the behaviour of a desktop PC and further away from that of a phone. The SPV keeps a good balance between the two and only loses ground because of the annoying number of really obvious bugs in its software and its very slow responsiveness.
Guest Paul [MVP] Posted March 3, 2003 Report Posted March 3, 2003 You honestly think the post update SPV is still slow and buggy?!? P
Guest tomdbomb61 Posted March 3, 2003 Report Posted March 3, 2003 yeh mine is still on the slow side, especially if u try and do two things at once, for example listen to music, and attempt an msn conversation! t
Guest tomdbomb61 Posted March 3, 2003 Report Posted March 3, 2003 worth selling my spv and getting a p800? dont really need a new fone but do like the look of the p800
Guest Monolithix [MVP] Posted March 3, 2003 Report Posted March 3, 2003 I couldn't see any P800's on display in my local Orange shop over the weekend. and my missus wouldn't let me stay to ask if htey had any ;) Either way, the SPV is perfectly useable now, no complaints my end really :)
Guest mantrac Posted March 3, 2003 Report Posted March 3, 2003 A couple of things in response to previous postings... All three Oxford Street Orange shops had sold all P800s on Saturday 1/3. The staff had one model for demonstration. And YES, I still think that the SPV is ridiculously slow compared to other smartphones (especially the Symbian ones). It's not AS SLOW as it used to be, but it still takes forever to pull up my contacts list while sending an MMS, it still periodically freezes when writing SMS messages and rendering a page on the browser or scrolling through it is a task for very patient people... And I'm not even going to mention the camera capture *facility*. Ta!
Guest tomdbomb61 Posted March 3, 2003 Report Posted March 3, 2003 yeh the camera on the spv is shite u wana capture a moment, or spontanious things, and those moments have to hold there position for about 6 seconds while the camera does its thing! pretty poo really compared to all the other camera phones ive seen! im torn, i could sell my spv for around 200-250, then buy a p800 offline. hummmmmmmmmmmmmmm decisions decisions! Tj

Tj I agree that the camera is slow to response. It has been the case with most camera-attachment phones, atleast the ones ive used. But the picture quality makes up for that. What more do u want with a 300k pixel cam? Getting a P800 just for a better camera doesn't seem wise to me. Cas
Guest tomdbomb61 Posted March 3, 2003 Report Posted March 3, 2003 hey anyone actually got a p800 that they have been using and care to share how it ACTUALLY comepares on a day to day level with the SPV thanks tom
Guest tomdbomb61 Posted March 3, 2003 Report Posted March 3, 2003 come on guys im relying on sum quality adivice before i part with my hard earned cash! thanks tj
Guest Monolithix [MVP] Posted March 3, 2003 Report Posted March 3, 2003 Calm down tom. People will answer if they feel they have an opinion to put forward, no-one has to reply....
Guest cvt Posted March 3, 2003 Report Posted March 3, 2003 Hi, I have used both phones quite extensively (both on 14 day trials) and I have gone back to the SPV. Firstly, let me tell you what is important.. I basically need a good phone with PDA capabilities - the camera has noooo interest to me (if you want a phone with a good camera - get a 7650) As a previous poster stated, the best way to describe the difference is that the p800 is a PDA with a phone rather than the SPV, which is a phone with a PDA. The other thing is that the p800 is centred around stylus input and the SPV is centred around t9/key entry. In terms of size, I found the p800 just too big (I dont wear belt clips and so i always carry it in my pocket) - the SPV works just fine (size wise) I dont think the p800 is very durable - I cant see it taking the knocks that most phones go through (take a look at your phone now) In the end, they are both GREAT phone. They BOTH have bugs/design inconsistencies/glitches and they will be worked out in time but you will learn to live with them with whatever phone you chose.
Guest Tyrant_worm Posted March 4, 2003 Report Posted March 4, 2003 If you want to use your phone for telephone calls, the SPV is choice every time. P800 is perhaps a better PDA but stinks for voice calls. The SPV has the benefit of being more flexible for anyone conversant with Windows(I am but I use Linux! :) I found the P800 to be extremely poor at setting up voice calls successfully and incoming and outgoing speech quality are very poor unless Personal Handsfree is used.
