Guest SFMH3 Posted March 3, 2003 Report Posted March 3, 2003 Well, the upgrade went without a hitch. However, I've noticed a few glitches which either annoy or really annoy. First, I can't activate the speakerphone if the phone is locked, answer a call yes, hit the button to go to speakerphone, no Also, navigation with the SMS/email system is shocking, I keep getting bounced around all over the place, cancel a message and I get thrown back to the main screen. And finally, it annoys me that I have to unlock the phone to see the main screen and check if I have any messages, although I think the battery life is extended just 'cos you don't keep activating the back light when it's jiggling in your pocket. Apart from that, the speed difference is blinding! Garry
Guest Richie M Posted March 3, 2003 Report Posted March 3, 2003 Hi Garry, glad you've updated OK and happy with the speed; 1) Cant say i've noticed this, everyone complains when i use Speakerphone (cos they can hear themselves speaking) so i hardly bother with it. 2) Just tried Canceling an SMS; took me back to the Inbox. 3) know what you mean, that really annoys me.
Guest Monolithix [MVP] Posted March 3, 2003 Report Posted March 3, 2003 SAme as above, not sure why you have to unlock to see the home screen though...?
Guest SFMH3 Posted March 3, 2003 Report Posted March 3, 2003 Somehow I've got my phone set so after a couple of minutes the screen goes completely blank. Saves battery life if nothing else!
Guest Monolithix [MVP] Posted March 3, 2003 Report Posted March 3, 2003 Hit the power button once and it'll bring it back up with the backlight. If you want to turn it off disable "screensaver" under power options in settings.
Guest SFMH3 Posted March 3, 2003 Report Posted March 3, 2003 Ahha.. another undocumented feature! Cheers 4 that
Guest amo Posted March 3, 2003 Report Posted March 3, 2003 To be perfectly honest, can you really expect orange to fully document every single feature on the phone? The main ones like sending sms, taking photos. yeah thats reasonable. BUt think of your LEGAL copy of windows xp, the manual that came with that, did that cover every single feature like how to turn the screensaver off? I dont think its feasable for any operating system manual to cover every feature as the manual would become bigger than the box! I thnk we've all managed to find out how to turn the screensaver off, and if anyone didnt they find out here. Beleive me, its a very difficult process to document every single feature on a phone. And little things need to be/can be missed out.
Guest SFMH3 Posted March 3, 2003 Report Posted March 3, 2003 Fair comment (although my OS is 2K server :) though I did think the ommision of how to activate the speaker phone was a little glaring...
Guest tomdbomb61 Posted March 3, 2003 Report Posted March 3, 2003 i felt the update went fine, i never use speaker fone cus people always complain of being able to hear themselves when i use it!
Guest Monolithix [MVP] Posted March 3, 2003 Report Posted March 3, 2003 My Win98 manual was partiulary comprehensive. About 300 pages long with plenty of information. WinXP official manual is probably in the online help that comes with the OS :)
Guest SFMH3 Posted March 3, 2003 Report Posted March 3, 2003 The only software I've seen recently that comes with decent manuals is Coldfusion MX, but you do have to register the product then Macromedia send the books to you. But back to topic, for a tech-phone, the SPV manual is shocking. If they wanted to cut down on costs, then enclose a PDF on the CD or something
Guest Matt Whitfield Posted March 3, 2003 Report Posted March 3, 2003 I have found that my SPV locks up more post update... The phone will look like it's still working (the lightt flashes) until you try to press something and nothing happens and you realise it's locked up - the only way to continue is to pull the battery off and restart... This has been quite irritating as it's crashed once causing me to miss my alarm in the morning, and crashed quite a few times and made me miss calls without realising! Has anyone had anything similiar?
Guest HelloDave Posted March 3, 2003 Report Posted March 3, 2003 You're sure it's locked? When the screen goes off the phone only responds to the left softkey being pressed. This is also another way to check your phone; press the left softkey twice to see the homescreen while it's locked.
Guest SFMH3 Posted March 3, 2003 Report Posted March 3, 2003 Going back to my original post, I've just gone to my inbox - composed a reply to a SMS, hit send, and been bounced back to the home page. Odd...
Guest Matt Whitfield Posted March 4, 2003 Report Posted March 4, 2003 Unfortunately I'm really sure it's locking up - tried the left soft key, power button, in fact all the buttons... Dead as a door nail  It's done it twice in a day before, but at the moment it's doing it every few days :?
Guest Sarah_SPV Posted March 4, 2003 Report Posted March 4, 2003 To be perfectly honest, can you really expect orange to fully document every single feature on the phone? To a certain extent, yes. I think the average SPV user is interested in how the phone works and the more advanced features of the phone, but the manual didn't pay any attention to these requirements. I took one look at the manual and then came here. I'm not saying everything should have been in there (you certainly wouldn't expect to see anything with the heading 'unlocking your phone' ), but Orange should have identified their customer base a bit better and catered for us. Perhaps they should take a look at the forum and write SPV Manual - Second Release.
Guest swanseastu Posted March 4, 2003 Report Posted March 4, 2003 2 Problems since upgrading I have noticed are 1 I cannot do a Orange Update anymore. When trying I get a message saying"alert, Could not load the locale specific resources for this application. Please contact your application Vendor" 2. I cannot do orange backup either, and get the message "alert, back up could not find the necessary files to run Please contact Customer support". For information (if it helps) I had the DK upgrade (and was also de'certed), then done the fix to allow me to upgrade to UK update. All went well on the upgrade installation
Guest akarno Posted March 4, 2003 Report Posted March 4, 2003 I have had a problem since the update, and it is performance related. Generally the phone works very well since the update and many things work quicker. One thing I have noticed though is a random slowdown when using heavy CPU application such as the Gameboy or NES emulators. An example I have noticed is Galaxian on the NES emulator. When the phone is running normally, this games run very well. The graphics are as smooth as the original arcade machine. Sometimes, usually after the phone has been on for a while, I notice that the display is jumpy, like I have lost FPS. I check with SP Task Manager and there are no other apps running and Physical memory seems fine. If I switch off and on it all starts working fine again. Has anyone else had this, or have any ideas about it. I should say that if you are using most standard apps. and even some games you will not see this.
Guest mike-oh Posted March 4, 2003 Report Posted March 4, 2003 My backlight still goes off after a couple of mins even when i've asked not to!!! ARRRGGH!!
Guest sbsdegb1 Posted March 4, 2003 Report Posted March 4, 2003 I used to have the phone lock turned on so that it would lock itself after 5 minutes of inactivity. Since applying the update I find I can no longer switch it on. I go to settings | security but when I try to switch on the phone lock the phone jumps back to the home screen. Anyone else had this sort of problem. Will persevere for a few more days but if it carries on I shall be on the phone to O
Guest mattat Posted March 4, 2003 Report Posted March 4, 2003 This has been reported elsewhere in the forum - but just for the sake of completeness a workaround was posted, once you have been kicked out to the home screen simply press the back button and it will take you back to the security screen and this time you won't be kicked out. Not too painful a work around :)
Guest sbsdegb1 Posted March 5, 2003 Report Posted March 5, 2003 spot on.. Indeed a simple work around that I can live with. Thanks

Guest Matt Whitfield Posted March 5, 2003 Report Posted March 5, 2003 My phone locked up again today... just after I snoozed my alarm! So I woke up an hour later than I should have... but as I was hungover I didn't mind the extra sleep on this particular occassion... But this is getting rather annoying... Would anyone recommend a hard reset, or is that unlikely to do anything? Cheers,
