Guest revolution.cx Posted March 4, 2003 Report Posted March 4, 2003 I just purchased an Orange unlocked phone and need to know if the update will affect the sim unlock aspect of it. I assume it can survive this and/or a hard reset without having to re-unlock it via the hack or Orange. Any info? Thanks
Guest MISMan Posted March 4, 2003 Report Posted March 4, 2003 I have sim-unlocked before the upgrade and subsequent hard reset and it has stayed each time.
Guest Syvwlch Posted March 4, 2003 Report Posted March 4, 2003 Same here. However, if the question was metaphysical (Could Orange reinstall the SIMlock via a future upgrade?) i guess they'd need to be able to change the GSM part of the phone Over The Air to restore the lock and change the SIMlock code, and then close the security hole that allows us to read the code from the phone in the aforementioned update. Sounds like that'd be rather difficult to do. What say our betters?
Guest Chris b.a.r.f. Posted March 4, 2003 Report Posted March 4, 2003 ...and, following on from the above, Orange would have to be bloody careful they didn't relock any phones that belong to punters who'd coughed up for the unlock code through official channels.... In other words, it's very unlikely Orange are going force a SIM-lock via an update of any sort. Maybe they'll make it more difficult to access the code but that'll be all.
Guest Myke Posted March 4, 2003 Report Posted March 4, 2003 orange will not and cannot, being there's no way for them to know whether you unlocked it through them or on your own.
Guest Syvwlch Posted March 4, 2003 Report Posted March 4, 2003 I suppose that makes sense. It's hard to imagine Orange doing a good enough job of keeping track who they gave unlock codes to.
