Guest purplebadger Posted March 4, 2003 Report Posted March 4, 2003 Anyone else get this? I called 156 today to ask them what the problem was and they gave me the standard response about going through the connection settings. When we'd established that the settings were correct, the next suggestion was that I pulled the battery out of the phone, left it half an hour, then put it back in and switch on. It worked. GPRS is back up and running. Durning the entire time I'd had a problem, the big G was displayed and the reception indicator was fine too. Anyone else been given this advice? What is it it achieves more than just switching off normally? Anyway, I thought removing the battery without powering down could result in 'serious data loss'! As an aside, that advice isn't much use if I need to be using my phone constantly. Anyone know why it happens?
Guest chewie Posted March 4, 2003 Report Posted March 4, 2003 Ah mine does that all the time, sometimes GPRS will work like a dream then the next minute it just sticks on dialing. Normally i just restart the phone and it works again!
Guest fraser Posted March 4, 2003 Report Posted March 4, 2003 I get it as well. I thought it was due to a bad reception, e.g. last night it was fine in my lounge but happened straight away in my bedroom. Thing is, once it happens the only solution is as purplebadger described...a reboot! Ah well, at least it reminds me which vendor wrote the OS for the phone. :)
Guest Monolithix [MVP] Posted March 4, 2003 Report Posted March 4, 2003 I've only ever had it when in area's with bad GPRS coverage (my desk at work, move 3' to either side and its fine :/) Killing the "dialing..." app or anything thats trying to usually helps, failing that just ctrl alt del its arse :)
Guest Syvwlch Posted March 4, 2003 Report Posted March 4, 2003 My work Orange account (the SIM that usually sits in the phone) doesn't have GPRS (don't ask...) and when I force a GPRS connection (rather than a CSD or automatic connection); then I usually get this behaviour. Not always, and usually not with PIE.
Guest HelloDave Posted March 4, 2003 Report Posted March 4, 2003 This happens to me quite a lot, and when it does I usually end up restarting the phone; 9 times out of 10 it'll be fine then, but it's a pain in the a**e!!
Guest Pagemakers Posted March 4, 2003 Report Posted March 4, 2003 Happens to me too. If you leave it dialling 70% of the time it will connect after a min or so.
Guest sticky Posted March 4, 2003 Report Posted March 4, 2003 Ah mine does that all the time, sometimes GPRS will work like a dream then the next minute it just sticks on dialing. Normally i just restart the phone and it works again! I find that mine sticks sometimes too - I switch off the radio from the Off menu, and then switch it back on. This seems to help, maybe by reinitializing the radio stack.
Guest v1nn1e Posted March 4, 2003 Report Posted March 4, 2003 I get this too. What I do is abort that atempt by pressing the cancel call button. Then I dial a number, say 150 or 152 (freephone numbers). I end the call after a couple of seconds then try connecting to gprs again. It works after that. It probably just resets itself in the network or something. Try this instead of rebooting, let me know if it works. Vin
Guest casper508 Posted March 4, 2003 Report Posted March 4, 2003 Perseverance is the key i think. I leave it running for a minute or so and it finally connects as Pagemakers mentions. On other occasions closing the app thru TaskManager and re-opening PIE does the job. Cas
Guest purplebadger Posted March 5, 2003 Report Posted March 5, 2003 Ah well, at least it reminds me which vendor wrote the OS for the phone. Heh. Anyone see the episode of Next Generation when the Enterprise gets a virus and the only solution is to reboot? :) No? Okay, I'll get me coat ... ;) I had tried the dialling another number solution and it doesn't work unfortunately. Have noticed what sometimes happens is that I'll try to go on the net (IE) and it just sits there (not even 'dialling') but if I go into my email it says dialling in there. I'll cancel that and then try IE again but it still doesn't work. Neither does leaving it for a while - just ends up giving me an error message saying it can't connect. Next time I'll give switching off the radio a go and see if that works. I couldn't believe Orange's advice though - remove the battery for half an hour?! Are they for real? Maybe I'll start auditing the amount of time I have to do that and then call customer services and let them know how many hours out of the month I've had to have my phone switched off so I can't use it. Thanks for the replies all.
