Guest TAS 2012 Posted March 4, 2003 Report Posted March 4, 2003 (whoops this post got long, it's just the first part that covers the topic, after that follows some general 'new SPV owner' reactions) Two days ago I got my Orange SPV phone, I immediatly updated it (with the UK update). Since then I've been in pain trying to decert it. I've read http://www.coolsmartphone.com/app-cert.htm and http://msmobiles.com/article.php/20.html until my eyes bled, I've done tons of searches on this forum and read hundreds of posts, analyzing every little word in them for a hint to solve my problem. After a zillion (read: 50) tries to get to the Canary Diag, and every time I 'felt' I was doing it right it only got stuck on a blank screen instead of the three-color Canary screen, I finally found the solution just before throwing both the phone and myself through the window. All guides mention that it's a good idea to have an SD/MM card in the phone, but they all say that this is not necessary, it's just a suggestion to make the *second* reboot take a bit longer time and to have more time to paste the file. I find this all wrong. With my phone at least, it was not possible (during the *first*/'reset' boot) to get anything except 'normal boot', 'tri-color screen, or 'white screen', but the very first time I tried doing it after I put an MM card in it worked perfectly, straight to the Canary Diag screen. I had to make a couple of tries before I got the paste-timing during the second reboot right, and during my reboots for this I found out that now it was either 'tri-color' screen (if I was slow) or Canary Diag screen, but never the blank white screen. I read some other user posts on these forums that stated the same problems and didn't seem able to solve them, I hope this helps you!!! (Why didn't I have a card in when the guides recommended it? My phone didn't come with any card and I didn't have any until I bought this one.) The sad part of the story is that in my uninformed stupidity I didn't understand that the 'Erase IPSM' would remove installed programs also... I thought it was only 'personal settings' sort of. (Note that I've had my SPV for only 2 days.) My SPV came with Rebound and Tube NYC, Paris and London and now they seem all lost...(?) ;) :D :( Wouldn't have mattered that much to me, if I wasn't actually going to NYC in a couple of weeks. :( If anyone has an idea of how to retrieve these from somewhere on my phone (or are they freeware downloads somewhere?) it is enourmously appreciated. Now that I started using the SPV I find it very nice with just a few annoying points. I write them here in hope to be corrected by someone who knows more than me... * the action key - Gaahhh! This could be the thing that makes me throw the phone out of the window finally. To be honest it's getting a bit better with use, but it's extremely more userunfriendly than other similar 'sticks' I've tried. Also the other keys are a bit awkward, I really see the point of the SPVx design change. * why can't it keep the light on always when it sits in the cradle?!!! (this annoys the h*** out of me) * why can't it keep the light on during movie playback? * why can't it keep the light on when you're holding a key pressed? (Ex: I do some action that requires long scrolling, and I have to let go and repress the button several times during the scrolling because it shuts off the light while I still hold the key pressed for scrolling.) * I can understand that I can't get a T9 dictionary for Swedish, since it's not even marketed here, but is there really no way to type the åäö characters when in US English mode? * some improved error handling for GPRS would be great. (I get the infamous 'unable to place call' all the time, even though it detects GPRS net etc, you've all read the story before... and since I'm perhaps the only one in Sweden with this phone the network operators don't know much about which settings I need to have.) * well perhaps some more that I can't recall right now... End of rant, feels good to have the SPV, and feels GREAT to have found this wonderful forum with it's many well-informed and friendly users. :) If there are any other SPV users in Sweden, or in any other non-SPV-local country even, please tell me. Perhaps we can pool some information about using the SPV on non-Orange territory..?
Guest Myke Posted March 4, 2003 Report Posted March 4, 2003 wait.. if you got to the 'Erase IPSM' screen then you succesfully got past the canary screen....
Guest TAS 2012 Posted March 4, 2003 Report Posted March 4, 2003 Myke, did you really read my post? It detailed the original problem, and then how I solved it. (so obviously it's after I solved it I came to the Erase IPSM choice  ) Oh, and my original subject ended with *solution*, but it seems the forum system cut it off... :?
Guest Gorskar Posted March 4, 2003 Report Posted March 4, 2003 The Tube MAP programs are commercial programs, so you will either have to buy them, or speak to whoever you got your SPV from and see if you can get another copy. A cheaper method is to just load a jpeg image of the map onto your phone, and use the picture viewer app to view it. If you want the rebound game then I can email that to you if you PM me your email address, as I believe it is freeware that comes with every phone. (I never play it though - got bored of it very quickly)
Guest amo Posted March 4, 2003 Report Posted March 4, 2003 TAS 2012: Screw rebound, get yourself the nes and gameboy emu when uve decerted!
Guest MISMan Posted March 4, 2003 Report Posted March 4, 2003 I had the same set of experiences, and tried the SD just like you. Kind of strange, but it worked so hey.
Guest TAS 2012 Posted March 5, 2003 Report Posted March 5, 2003 MISman: The guides should probably be modfied to include this information, to spare others from this situation. I'll try sending a mail to the webmasters about it. Gorskar: Hmmm, so that's about all it was? I didn't have much time to try it out before, but I figured there must be something more to it, like a route planner or something. Well, well. Hehe, seems Rebound is not the game of choice here. Personally I'm very happy to see Nethack ported, played it for an hour or two yesterday. Are there any *really* good commercial games that are worth paying for? I'll be trying the emus too... :)
Guest TAS 2012 Posted March 5, 2003 Report Posted March 5, 2003 *sigh* Suddenly (after many installations and power on/off and whatever) it decided to revert to certification mode... I didn't even do a power on/off, it just happened out of the blue while I was changing some skin settings. Does anyone know why this 're-certfication' happens or how to avoid it?
Guest awarner [MVP] Posted March 5, 2003 Report Posted March 5, 2003 It has been posted before that if your phone reverts back to the locked state it is because certain filesregistery has become corrupt, and the phone has a wonderful auto fix utility
Guest TAS 2012 Posted March 5, 2003 Report Posted March 5, 2003 Yup, thanks, I did my forum search and found this thread: http://www.modaco.com/viewtopic.php?t=3711 Now I'm pretty sure this happened because I made some corrupted xml for the home page. Serves me well for not checking my XML properly... Actually not a bad feature, even though it's a trouble with having to decert the phone again...
Guest Myke Posted March 5, 2003 Report Posted March 5, 2003 rebound makes me want to vomit all over myself
Guest awarner [MVP] Posted March 5, 2003 Report Posted March 5, 2003 Are you sure? or did it just "rebound" :) sorry had to say it ;)
