Is there any utility available to zip/unzip files directly on the spv?

Is anyone thinking of developing an 'spvzip'?

It would be a handy utility.

Here we go.....

Would it? I remember I had one on my PPC a whule back, and that wasn't much more powerful than the SPV.

Would it? I don't see how/why?

Maybe if you transporting larger files on the SD card but then should really get a USB Storage Keyring instead or a Pocket hardrive.

My site has all its downloads zipped up, if direct download capabilities are ever implemented it might be useful :)

Moved to software too...

I meant that IMHO it isn't really necessary rather than isn't possible. You can use it to store zipped files if you want to move files around, but is it really necessary to zip and unzip them on the phone? I wouldn't have thought so.

But, as I say, this is just my opinion and, since SANDMAN asked for it, I presume he wants it. Just asking if he's really got a use for it of just thought it might be good...

Do GBC roms compress noticeably when zipped? If they do, I could see a use for a zipper app, if it was reasonably fast...

I think some of the emulators already support compressing the ROM files, but the compression format isn't zip files.

I searched the board to try and figure out what compression format is to be used (it was a predominatly Linux one, with a windows port), but I had no joy.

The documentation mentioned halfing the file size was common, IIRC.

Quite funny this post ;) ! I worked all day long on SmartUNZIP which will allow unzipping files zipped with winzip !

It should be out next week.

Stay tuned :)

Syvwlch: they pretty much halved in size when i zipped them through linux.

amo, what compression utility is it? I've been meaning to compress mine, but I can't find the original post/documentation that mentioned it.

I think it's GZip, but ask in the GNUBoy thread - bit OT here!

That is correct it is GZip technology. WINRar on Windows supports it.

Thanks Amo!

That's pretty much the only thing I'd use a Zip program right now, but I'm sure other uses will pop up!

Sorry for the delayed response - Updating to broadband + rebuilding my rig.

Thank you, thank you, thank you for your opinions and comments over Winzip for SPV.

My reply is:

Hey, why not - it does everything else!

Also :-

My transfers fail when sending photos or large files

Storing docs/wavs/pics on the phone

Quicker transfers to IR devices + my iPaq

Compressing voice note recordings

Storing your favourite film clips

Mail attachments

and of course.......

SHOWING OFF!

Looking forward to it coming out! I can't think what I'll do with it, but still looking forward! :)

Bring it on, man! I'm in awe of all you people releasing software for this phone.

*sniffle*

You're beautiful. All of you.

It will be useful, especially if you want to show something to a mate (i.e. show off!), but don't have the particular download on your phone. Most of the freeware for the SPV is in zip form, so it would enable people to do more without being tied to a sync cable.

Hi, here is the first alpha version, just to let you know what it will look like.

For the moment, it only displays the content of the zip files (zipped by winzip for example). To open a zip file, use smartexplorer and press action on a .zip file.

Extract All should be available soon...

The aim is to provide an UNzipper, not a zipper.
