I would love to be able to play monkey island on my SPV and have had a short look at the pocket SCUMM application for the smartphone.

I can download the app and it runs fine but where do i get the games from?????

You buy them from Lucasarts. They even still sell a retro games pack that includes the original monkey island games.

O, RIGHT! you actualy need the originals!

i better go and dig them out then......

for loading the originals, there's processes you can use that do things like turn the sound into mp3 etc to make them loads smaller. There's details about it all on the main pocketscumm site. I think you can use them uncoverted, it just means the files are much bigger than they need to be.

To be honest I haven't got round to trying it yet... I actually dug out my original DOTT and Sam'N'Max CDs the other day tho, so I'm half way there.

Yep. Sound conversion works and pocketscum is hell of an app.

however things to consider:

a) The screen is reduced: character recognition is quite tricky and you are likely missing important details

:) Lucas Games strongly rely on mouse control (although the mouse is emulated by the cursor pad its realy tricky. Things you would do in a blink of the eye with a mouse are going to take you 15 to 20 seconds)

c) buy the original. there is a nice copy protection in these games. For example to play monkey island you need a specific matchmaking wheel

My opinion: Although it's nice to be reminded of those days you had time to spend whole nights in frontt of your pc, you probably will give up soon because gameplay without a mouse is awfull.

Frank

Well, just say how the next version can be improved in your opinion, and this might just happen :)(I already know that a better (faster) mouse control is needed, but you can already use the swap key to jump from one part of the screen to another)

its not the game itself or pocket scumm its the fact there is no mouse... maybe someone can design something so you can plug a mouse into the SPV!

The best ways to improve it IMO are

1) To make the cursor more distinct, can get lost on the small screen

2) Two settings for moving the cursor, i.e One really fast setting for moving around the screen and one for more precise moments

3) General speed of Pocket Scumm, at the moment it feels a bit cumbersome

4) Can't exit properly, or you couldn't the last time I tried.

5) Because of the size of the screen, could the "hot" spots on the screen be highlighted

Still, great app though

difficult, as the cursor is "game dependant"

2) Two settings for moving the cursor, i.e One really fast setting for moving around the screen and one for more precise moments

ok, I can move it faster when the key is held down

3) General speed of Pocket Scumm, at the moment it feels a bit cumbersome
bah ... sure you tried the second version :) ?

4) Can't exit properly, or you couldn't the last time I tried.

Options menu then Quit is working fine here (make sure you mapped it)

5) Because of the size of the screen, could the "hot" spots on the screen be highlighted
can be done, but sometimes the discovery of these hotspots is part of the puzzles

Still, great app though

thanks

it is playable without a mouse (I know because as a very addicted Lucas fan I replay the games sometimes ) ... make sure you're using the "zone" special key and holding down the "mouse" buttons to move faster
