Guest blade001 Posted March 7, 2003 Report Posted March 7, 2003 I am sure there is a way to find out the phones current IP with out using hte net. i dont have all explorer to do this. iwas wodering that is there any other way htat you can find out wots the IP address is for your phone and is it a static or a dynamic IP.
Guest Ethanol Posted March 7, 2003 Report Posted March 7, 2003 Thats a good question. When you go onto settings>data connections edit>gprs>orange gprs. at the bottom there is a box stating IP address. My box is blank. I assume orange allocates a dynamic address but thre must be a way of assigning yourself a static address otherwise the would be no option to input one.
Guest Maverick Posted March 7, 2003 Report Posted March 7, 2003 If u have Regedit and ur phone is connected... u can find it in the registry.. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINEcommtcpiphostsppp_peeripaddr. Its in HEX... Use the Windows Calculator to convert it into decimals...
Guest PhilA Posted March 7, 2003 Report Posted March 7, 2003 That's interesting - the IP Address I got was 172.x.x.x. 172 IP addresses are designated private IP addresses, and are not routeable from the internet (try pinging one, and you'll get a host unreachable error). This means that there is no way anyone can hack your phone over the internet as it doesn't really exist there, they must use nat addressing or a proxy to actually get you onto the internet.
Guest Monolithix [MVP] Posted March 7, 2003 Report Posted March 7, 2003 Yep. The MMS GPRS network ip is also internal (192.168.xxx.xxx), presumably to allow them to charge for MMS seprately to GPRS, and possibly the reason x-net MMS is difficult (?). Which brings up an interesting thought. If you change the IP in your MMS settings to the GPRS 172.xxx.xxx.xxx does that allow free MMS, or will the gateway for that internal network not know what to do with it?
Guest Posted March 7, 2003 Report Posted March 7, 2003 Yeah, the internet access is done through a router type system (obviously a little more complex than one for ADSL). You would be allocated a dynamic IP address too. Static IP addresses are not used that often now as far as I am aware. Apparently BT ADSL provides a static IP? Anyway, MMS is done through a WAP profile using GPRS as a bearer with a slightly different access point than for 'orangeinternet' or 'orangewap'. Think of them like sub-networks... Foz
Guest fraser Posted March 7, 2003 Report Posted March 7, 2003 The IP behind these phones is pretty complex. Most applications don't like ever-changing IP addresses, so I believe they have a hand-over system where the IP follows you as you travel with it. Clever stuff. Anyway, is anyone writing a very basic app to show this reg key? The Registry is good enough for getting the value now and again, but it would be good to have a nice way to do it.
