Guest mantrac Posted March 7, 2003 Report Posted March 7, 2003 Does anyone know if and when RealNetworks plan a release for RealPlayer on the SPV. They already have one out for PocketPCs so I'm a bit surprised that we haven't seen (or heard anything) about an SPV port yet...
Guest Richie M Posted March 7, 2003 Report Posted March 7, 2003 Why would you want SpyWare on your SPV?
Guest fraser Posted March 7, 2003 Report Posted March 7, 2003 I second Richie M's comment. RealPlayer is evil because: - it's a proprietry closed format - they used to spy on your internet usage and report it back to them (and then denied this until it was proven beyond all doubt by someone else) - they won't let you disable "smartstart", so their process is always running - it steals file associations - they hide and move the free version on their site to trick you into buying something - they hide spam signups at the bottom of a long list - you get spam popup from the "smartstart" gismo - they force you to upgrade regularly by time limiting the versions - plus lot's more It's the last thing I want on my phone!!
Guest 15 yr old Posted April 16, 2003 Report Posted April 16, 2003 i didnt know it was that bad!!!!!!!!!!
Guest madu Posted April 16, 2003 Report Posted April 16, 2003 G man, that's the last thing I want on my PC! I still use it occasionaly but prefer the older version - shite, but at least not that advanced shite... PS: Spyware detector - the one and only, I use it all the time. Lavasoft.de and it's called Adaware. Blatant plug, but it is worth it (and free ocourse).
Guest EMGenius Posted April 16, 2003 Report Posted April 16, 2003 Real player is evil, i agree, I think that it in the same league as Starbucks in trying to take over the world...
Guest fraser Posted April 16, 2003 Report Posted April 16, 2003 My company has a special version of RealPlayer with all the dodgy crap removed. Sorry, there is absolutely no way I can share it with anyone, so don't ask! But I thought I'd mention it, as it implies that Real know they are a bit evil.
Guest Palindrome Posted April 16, 2003 Report Posted April 16, 2003 What's the special version called? Is it possible to buy for home users?
Guest HelloDave Posted April 17, 2003 Report Posted April 17, 2003 I have to agree - Real Player is absolute sh*te, and Real are really taking the p*ss expecting people to pay £10 a month for the privelige of using the "Gold pass" or whatever it is! That's getting towards the cost of a basic Sky package, but Sky doesn't have the pixellated video (exept on my crap Amstrad POS digibox!) or require a broadband connection to work. Having said that, Sky shows a lot of junk/adverts and makes you connect your box to the phoneline so they can spy on you (I assume that's how they get viewing figures?), so there are similarities! I was never a big fan of Real, but versions of the player up to 8 were OK, beyond that they've just lost it - RealOne invades your computer like nothing else, is sluggish and yet they expect you to pay for it! Real have always been "creative" with their website - they do their absolute best to hide the free version of their player, a bit like the Hotmail extra storage scam (it doesn't make the free account obvious). Now if I had a penny for the amount of people who've told me they can't sign up to Hotmail because it'll cost them $19.95 a year, ooh, I could buy...umm...a king size Mars bar ;) I also don't like Real because it's a closed standard - once you've got an .rm file that's pretty much it as far as conversion goes. Having said that, none of the other streaming web formats are any better - Windows Media is my pick at the moment but the player is a bit sluggish. Quicktime is cr*p IMO - it insists on asking to upgrade every time you load it, and like all things Apple goes for style over substance - the interface might look "pretty" but it crawls! (And the media quality isn't up to much either) When will Apple learn... I personally think open standards are the future, such as DiVX, but sadly the big corporations will never share my view. Open standards mean users can have control, which is the last thing companies like Real want - they'd rather we paid them every time we even think about using their so called "secure" media. Users get to decide what to do with the media they've bought? Certainly not!
Guest Coolboy1982 Posted April 17, 2003 Report Posted April 17, 2003 Actually RealPlayer being spyware, would be the ideal companion for an MS smartphone, cause we all know how much most MS programmes spy on us! ;-) Would not be surprised if they logged alll our msn conversations, sms, mails, and recorded our voice conversations ;-) Sorry, being a bit cynic here, as I still think the spv is a great piece of kit!
Guest mikey808 Posted April 17, 2003 Report Posted April 17, 2003 It's possible to use winamp for real media files (video and audio) and uninstall real player if you use the methods described here : http://forums.winamp.com/showthread.php?threadid=58186 Be aware that even early versions of real player integrate into your web browser and silently use port 80 to communicate out to real networks. I use winamp 2.9 with this method and it works very well with video as well. If anyone's interested in doing this and has any problems then please ask me. Btw if anyone thinks Real player isn't a horrendous piece of trojan malware then they should read this article: http://grc.com/downloaders.htm
Guest CamperBoy Posted April 17, 2003 Report Posted April 17, 2003 I understand mantrac's reason for wanting to play real's format on the SPV. Many radio stations etc. insist on using the fomat, and it would be ideal to be able to stream your favourite station on the SPV.
Guest Rob.P Posted April 17, 2003 Report Posted April 17, 2003 ...Would not be surprised if they logged alll our msn conversations, sms, mails, and recorded our voice conversations... They already do, well not Microsoft, the FBI though, it's called Carnivore and it located in the basement of the Langley HQ of the FBI. It monitors most channels looking for keywords and such like. Most western countries have a subscription to use it's services, the UK included. There was a petition and 1 v.successful hack against it which set-it back a bit. Obviously it's back up to full working order by now as this was a number of years ago. *waves the one finger salute at the FBI, who are monitoring this post* ;)

I bet they are using Real and MS software for it ;-)
Guest fraser Posted April 17, 2003 Report Posted April 17, 2003 What's the special version called? Is it possible to buy for home users? It's not called anything different, it's based off Real Player 8. It's default install options are privacy-friendly (unlike the original) plus it doesn't have any time limits or "you must upgrade to RealOne" crap. I doubt it's available to the public. I assume my extremely large company said to Real that we won't allow staff to install it unless you make a special version. If word got out that my company didn't trust them, it wouldn't do Real any favours at all.
Guest looeee Posted April 21, 2003 Report Posted April 21, 2003 go to http://pub25.ezboard.com/bstreemeboxvcr read the FAQ use the tools there to download your real streams (i like StreamBox VCR Suite 2.0) convert them to rm or asf copy to spv
