Guest chloe Posted March 8, 2003 Report Posted March 8, 2003 Just curious as to how much or the percentange of the price of an SPV goes to Microsoft as payment for the licence for using its Smartphone 2002 operating system. When and if Microsoft release Smartphone 2003 will we be able to buy it as an upgrade, get it for free (highly unlikely) or will we have to buy a new phone altogether?
Guest Paul [MVP] Posted March 8, 2003 Report Posted March 8, 2003 I think it's about $20 or something similar, but not 100% sure. It's up to the handset manufacturer as to whether they provide the update for free! (here's hoping!) I guess the problem is they'll have to rewrite all the drivers for a new OS, which may not make sense for an old phone... P
Guest Gorskar Posted March 8, 2003 Report Posted March 8, 2003 I thought it was less than that - $5 or so, but I can't think where I got that. Perhaps we could ask microsoft, and then the person who's closest wins a prize! :)
Guest Cent Posted March 9, 2003 Report Posted March 9, 2003 Who says the Upgrade will be done by the operator ? The new OS might just be released by MS for your own purchase. PC's also ship with an existing OS... if however you want to use the latest and greatest you usually have to purchase that seperatly or wait until PC's ship with it. Therefore I guess we will pay for the upgrade or they will ship new phones with it only.
Guest Paul [MVP] Posted March 9, 2003 Report Posted March 9, 2003 The OS will DEFINITELY never be released by MS directly - there is too much integration work (i.e. drivers etc) that is handset specific. P
Guest Cent Posted March 9, 2003 Report Posted March 9, 2003 "]The OS will DEFINITELY never be released by MS directly I agree with you there. But the installer - just like with the upgrade - might become available for purchase.
Guest Firaas Posted March 9, 2003 Report Posted March 9, 2003 I agree with you there. But the installer - just like with the upgrade - might become available for purchase. It might by Orange, but not by Microsoft. Orange will have to work with HTC to get the drivers/radio etc sorted, and then may decide to sell it on to us at £10 profit (to make up for the cost of work on the new OS). Remember, this is a phone with a ROM and not a PC with a hard drive :)
