Can you only create MMS if the camera is connected?

I've been researching the SPV for a long time now (just look when I joined this forum) and while I wait for mine to arrive, I have one question for any helpful souls out there.

I remeber reading, around launch time that you could only create MMS messages on the SPV if the camera was attached. Is this still true after the various software updates?

No its not true. You don't need the camera attached to send an MMS. That has always been the case even before we got the fancy softwares. Also assuming that you have the pic you want to send stored on the phone or SD.
