Guest Simon Desser Posted April 13, 2003 Report Posted April 13, 2003 Since doing the Uk update 1.3.7 for the keyboard drivers on Friday, I noticed a drastic reduction in battery life. So today I've tested it, and it's bad news  With nothing running, no calls, no texts no browsing, my battery has reached the same percentage (70%) about 3 hours earlier than it used to before the update with light use. It's that noticable, that I'm gonna end up "going back" to before this update, and forget using the keyboard till they sort it out :!:
Guest midnight Posted April 13, 2003 Report Posted April 13, 2003 interesting, are you using the keyboard during your test????
Guest wirefree90 Posted April 13, 2003 Report Posted April 13, 2003 Strange I've not noticed any reduction in battery life. Sure that network is up and running in your area ? If a BTS goes down this can reduce battery life as well.
Guest Simon Desser Posted April 14, 2003 Report Posted April 14, 2003 Sorry :!: I might be wrong about the update  I "went back" to before the "Keyboard Update" last night, and today my battery life seems worse than ever :!: Has anyone who has applied the latest update noticed any reduction in battery life? I'll probably have to speak to Orange about a replacement battery. Cheers Simon.
Guest Will Posted April 15, 2003 Report Posted April 15, 2003 UPDATE. I am very conscious of battery life, so when i WON!! the keyboard, and was told 'it'll knacker your batterlife' I was worried. Now I've only tried this for a short while, but it seems that UPDATE 1.3.7 does not display the battery level in the same way as the previous ones, I was on 1 bar from 9am to 5pm making calls and surfing. and NEVER got the low battery warning.. I will investigate more over easter, but I think it gives 3 bars at 80% 2 at 60% and 1 at 40%. ... the older ones (from memory) were 75%,50%and 25% respectively. Will
Guest martinb Posted April 15, 2003 Report Posted April 15, 2003 I had a chat with the guys from Eleksen the other week and asked them what the power consumption of the keyboard would be. They assured me that the keyboard would not drain the battery badly and the current required is only about 1mA.
Guest sparks1061 Posted April 15, 2003 Report Posted April 15, 2003 I've just had a new phone and battery from O, my standby time was down to 3hrs!!!!! One thing to check, when your phone is on charge does it stay on mains? or does it switch back and fore between mains and battery? Mine now switches to battery after it's fully charges, then back to mains after about 30mins! I haven't done the lastest update but this only started happening about 2 weeks ago, With a new phone and battery it is still doing it!!! I guess the only thing left to change is my charger, but at least now my battery life is more usable, haven't measured it yet but it's somewhat more than 3hrs!!!!! Oh and one last rant! had some idiot from O customer services tell me that the SPV was known for poor battery life and 3 hrs standby was acceptable!!!!
Guest Simon Desser Posted April 15, 2003 Report Posted April 15, 2003 I think it's "normal" for the phone to charge up fully, then to trip off until it falls back to 95% charged, then it will charge back up again to 100% . If you leave your phone on charge overnight, I suppose it could repeat this cycle a few times.
Guest midnight Posted April 15, 2003 Report Posted April 15, 2003 yep, its completely normal to charge on and off when at full charge
Guest Simon Desser Posted April 15, 2003 Report Posted April 15, 2003 This "battery business" is REALLY doing my head in :? Yesterday my battery life was appauling, and I'd returned my SPV to "before 1.3.7 Update state". I made sure no apps were running, and took the phone off (full) charge at 7.30am and didn't use it at all. At 11.30am, my phone was down to 70% charge. Today, I also took it off charge at 7.30 am, and I've used it a little bit, and I'm now on 75% charge, almost 8 hours after it reached 70% yesterday :!: :?: :!: This is about "normal" for me since the major UK update, so I don't know what the heck happened the last few days? I spent all day at work yesterday and today, where both days I had "full" signal strength all day?
Guest Will Posted April 15, 2003 Report Posted April 15, 2003 one note try measuring how long until you get low battery message. ignore the battery bar display or is it just me will
Guest Simon Desser Posted April 15, 2003 Report Posted April 15, 2003 Until I became a bit paranoid about the battery (this weekend) I didn't really pay too much attention to it. However, last Friday (the day I did the Keyboard update) I noticed the meter was showing low very quickly. Then on Saturday again, (at the MoDaCo event), and on the train home, I was getting the low battery warning at about 10.00pm. This was after a couple of short calls, a text message, 10 minutes of DivX, and 15 minutes of mp3's. So it doesn't seem to just be the indicator? Anyway, since my 7.30pm post earlier this evening, I've been "hammering" the phone, installing apps, playing games etc etc. and it's holding up nicely, so I just don't get it?
Guest caio1 Posted April 16, 2003 Report Posted April 16, 2003 Maybe you didn't fully charged.. who knows...hehe Did you guys notice how much it lasts with "radio off"??? Ehehe... I think if they can still optimize the software which handles the phone part it can last a lot more! Caio
Guest Stef Posted April 16, 2003 Report Posted April 16, 2003 I havent installed the new update as I dont have the keyboard, but I have noticed occassionally that the battery life reduces in its capacity to provide a decent level of standby. When this happens (only done it 2/3 times) I switch off the phone and leave it on charge all night (roughly 8 hours) and then carry on charging it when it needs it. Seems to do the trick.
Guest jcat Posted April 22, 2003 Report Posted April 22, 2003 Just as a side point: If you leave the Keyboard plugged into the phone, the screen is not able to go blank, and this of course kills the battery quite quickly. It's due to the fact that HTC don't allow the screen to go blank while there's an open com port... Either plug it in as and when needed (no hassle due to auto launch), or plug a psu into the keyboard and keep it running of the mains. Cheers, jcat
Guest Brody Posted April 22, 2003 Report Posted April 22, 2003 I totally reset my handset last week and reinstalled everything so that it runs smoothly and so that i know where everything islocated (SD or phone) and i installed the new update after that and have noticed no extra battery drain to be honest!
Guest cherbert Posted April 22, 2003 Report Posted April 22, 2003 There is most definately a real battery draining problem with the Keyboard Driver. I installed the ROM update / Keyboard driver and found my phone bairly lasted the day. I decided to test the case by removing the Keyboard Driver from the Add/Remove option. Since doing this my phone has been fine. Last 2 days if I don't use it to much. I can't believe not many people have noticed this as I sure did the day I applied the update. Chris Herbert Telford, UK
Guest Deemon Posted April 22, 2003 Report Posted April 22, 2003 I havent installed the update...in fact ive not done much to my phone of late...kinda happy with it....but last week for some reason my battery was only lasting a single day....nothing was running...got a bit worried that my battery was screwed....but then a few days later i noticed that it had gone back to lasting for a couple of days(only 2-3 mind you)..... battery = quirky !
Guest Simon Desser Posted April 22, 2003 Report Posted April 22, 2003 That's exactly what happened to me, both after running the keyboard update, and also after hard resetting and going back to a "before this update state" Therefore retracting my comment about it being the update that screwed up my battery life  However, I'm still confused, and havn't re-applied the update as (maybe coincidentally) I had three days of totally crap battery life with the update installed :?:
Guest jcat Posted April 23, 2003 Report Posted April 23, 2003 Hmmm, the keyboard driver is only active when the keyboard is plugged in, if the battery runs down faster without the keyboard attached then it's certainly not the driver at fault. The ROM update basically just enables Autolaunch for external devices, I suppose this may effect battery life (although I don't know how), but that's HTC's problem, not really ElekSen’s. I don't know if the ROM update included any other functionality either, maybe it did... Cheers, jcat
Guest cherbert Posted April 23, 2003 Report Posted April 23, 2003 I don't have a Keyboard. Battery life returned to normal once I removed the driver. I did not remove the rom update. So its the driver not the update! And its draining battery without having a keyboard plugged in because I don't have one.
Guest jcat Posted April 23, 2003 Report Posted April 23, 2003 Given that the driver only exists on the phone as file, and is not run unless you plug in a keyboard, I would love to know how it's running your battery down. Could it be magic? jcat
Guest cherbert Posted April 23, 2003 Report Posted April 23, 2003 I don't know the answer to your question I'm just stating the facts of my situation in order that together we may all try and find out what is going on. But since you can't possibily know the intricate details of what goes on during the driver update I fail to see how you can be so sure of yourself unless you are a qualified SPV developer working for either Orange or Microsoft! Having the Keyboard Driver installed on my SPV drains my battery by about 3 times its normal rate. FACT!
Guest jcat Posted April 23, 2003 Report Posted April 23, 2003 I am the IT Systems Admin for ElekSen Ltd, the company who make the keyboard (and hence the driver)... So yes I do know a few of those "intricate" details you refer to. jcat
