Guest xanadu Posted March 11, 2003 Report Posted March 11, 2003 I have noticed that GPRS data transfer speeds are slower after the UK update. Pre-update, I used to be able to acieve 44Kb/s, but now I am unable to get more than 20Kb/s. To get the fastest speeds you need to be within close range of the Orange transmitter, and on some busy sites you will only get a fast data rate when voice traffic is low, as voice traffic takes priority over unused GPRS capacity. Can someone else with the UK update try this speed Test on your SPV and post the results you get. http://www.pcpitstop.com/internet/bandwidth.asp
Guest Simon Desser Posted March 11, 2003 Report Posted March 11, 2003 I tried it a few times earler today. My results (assuming they're to be believed) varied between 13kb/s and 21 kb/s. If this is the case it might explain the problems we now seem to be having streaming media and it buffering every few seconds?
Guest ajb3000 Posted March 11, 2003 Report Posted March 11, 2003 Maybe the update made the phone 'usable' to a much larger potential market, more people bought it once the update was out, more GPRS usage makes slower speeds.
Guest casper508 Posted March 11, 2003 Report Posted March 11, 2003 I have noticed a decrease when watching streaming media. Donno what the speed was before but the test came up at 27 kb/s. Cas
Guest TSCRYPTO Posted March 11, 2003 Report Posted March 11, 2003 Dumb-ass question, I'm sure... But how did you folk measure your GPRS connection speed? :?
Guest Vector Posted March 11, 2003 Report Posted March 11, 2003 Look at the link on the first post on this thread
Guest TSCRYPTO Posted March 11, 2003 Report Posted March 11, 2003 Wakey wakey... :? I did 2 tests: 12kb/s and 22kb/s
Guest xanadu Posted March 11, 2003 Report Posted March 11, 2003 I have just chat with someone at Orange 156 about this, and they say they don't guarantee the speed, even though I know the data transfer speeds were higher before the update. I am certainly not happy about this as I have noticed in general that both WAP and Web browsing with GPRS are now slower than before. I am not sure what we can do to prove to Orange that the SPV UK update has reduced GPRS data speed. I just tried again and got 16Kb/s, but I know that around midnight when my local BTS is quieter I could acheive speeds in the 30 or 40Kb/s range.
Guest okocha10 Posted March 11, 2003 Report Posted March 11, 2003 i hope its possible to fix! i was wondering why the radio kept buffering so often(about every 10/15 secs!!), it was really getting on my tits!
Guest jhew Posted March 12, 2003 Report Posted March 12, 2003 I've just tried it twice and got 31kb/s and 11kb/s. Seems odd to get 2 such wildly different results, but maybe this is what's causing the buffering in WMP. Bursts of good speed instead of it being constant. Whatever's going on it's d e f i n a t e l y slower. Did this test a few times back in January, and I got pretty uniform results up in the high 40's. What's going on Orange? I cant watch/listen to streaming media anymore, it's just too choppy. I cant believe that network supply is outweighing the demand. Maybe they've throttled the GPRS back to save themselves some £££ until the £6 a month thing is over. Just done it again and got 16kb/s and 10kb/s!
Guest Pagemakers Posted March 12, 2003 Report Posted March 12, 2003 Maybe a moderator from this board could get us an "official" answer from Orange?
Guest simonastro Posted March 12, 2003 Report Posted March 12, 2003 six consecutive results from my phone taken around 10am in kb/s 27 9 27 25 11 15 six consecutive results from my BT adsl line in kb/s 326 443 736 713 390 199 as my adsl maximum download speed is supposed to be 512kb/s and registers at 576kb/s I cannot regard these results as accurate. I too have given up on steaming media because of the buffering problem perhaps we should find a more verifiable test ?
Guest xanadu Posted March 12, 2003 Report Posted March 12, 2003 The best I have acheived is 27Kb/s this morning. It was definitely better before the update. Maybe this is how they saved some battery life, by reducing the GPRS data rate ??
Guest xanadu Posted March 12, 2003 Report Posted March 12, 2003 Here is another speed tester http://promos.mcafee.com/speedometer It still gives me the same speeds 17Kb/s just now.
Guest simonastro Posted March 12, 2003 Report Posted March 12, 2003 mcafee is giving me much more consistant readings in line with what I would expect cheers gprs at 17kb/s its a bit s*** innit
Guest James Posted March 12, 2003 Report Posted March 12, 2003 Using McAfee:- (have got 3 bars of signal) Test No. 1: 20.72 Kbps :) Test No. 2: 9.92 Kbps Test No. 3: 16.64 Kbps Test No. 4: 7.2 Kbps
Guest fraser Posted March 12, 2003 Report Posted March 12, 2003 Don't rely on the McAfee one. I just tried it in work and we have two frame relay 2 mbit connections, and it told me I was behind a 512k DSL line. Yeah, right, I get 300+ kbyte/s sec downloads in here all the time! Plus, the file size used for the test is 150 kbyte, done only once. Far from scientific! I think it cheats, the "wobbling" needle on the dial is pretty false.

Guest xanadu Posted March 12, 2003 Report Posted March 12, 2003 [quote Works for me at work without problems I get 415Kb/s
Guest superkingdave Posted March 12, 2003 Report Posted March 12, 2003 im getting 12-20kb/s when i do it...well pissed off i shouldn't have done the update it takes me twice as long to access any page now..grrrrr! orange are making me red with rage
Guest ashley Posted March 13, 2003 Report Posted March 13, 2003 You want to be testing this with your PC using the phone as a modem. Then you can test ftp downloads regularly from a specific site at differing times - that would be scientific - not these crap sites that tell me i'm running at 200kbps with my 2mbps link! Ashley
Guest Scoobyroo Posted March 14, 2003 Report Posted March 14, 2003 Funilly enough I tried a bit of surfing myself today (first time since upgrade) and it really is noticable... Normaly I could get orange home up in arounf 6 seconds... now it takes 15-20! :?
Guest yzbob Posted March 14, 2003 Report Posted March 14, 2003 well last night i did a speed test around 9pm and was always getting between 40 and 60kbs i then did the upgrade and 20mins later im getting between 20 and 35kbs this is definitely the upgrade causing this. grrr
Guest pteale Posted March 14, 2003 Report Posted March 14, 2003 I think Orange are giving the bandwidth to P800 users now  I did the test on my P800 and got 39.36
