Ordering SPV - help!

I posted a similar msg on the smartphone newsgroup but I thought I'd post it here too. Someone on there said that just about nobody had any SPV's in stock at the moment, including Orange themselves.....which got me thinking about my current situation.....

I can get my PAC number tomorrow and cancel my contract which ends a week tomorrow. So, if I order an SPV tomorrow I'd need to get it by a week tomorrow otherwise I'd be left without a connection. Does getting a PAC number automatically cancel your account?

Basically I'm worried that getting an SPV and the deal that i want (i.e. free/£10 with talk 120 or o2 100) may prove difficult as stock levels are low and demand is quite high. I don't want to be left without a connection if getting an SPV takes more than a week. I also don't want to have to pay for another month with Vodafone just to overlap (presuming this would be possible considering i'm getting a PAC number from them and transferring my number to Orange).

Help! Am I likely to get an SPV with the deal i want from an online store by the end of next week? If this is unlikely, what's the best way to go about keeping a connection with my current number? Could Orange send me a sim card to use until I got the SPV, even if i order it from an independent online shop.

I can't afford anything but free or very cheap with the contract i want, hence my inflexibility!

Stock is just starting to filter thru I think, but watch this space for an exclusive tie up with a dealer, with excellent stock levels!

Stick seems patchy on the high street. My local Orange shop has a waiting list of 20 and reckons it will take a few weeks to clear it. *NEXT DOOR* in The Link they had stock and price-matched me one for free.

I was surprised that the Link ended up being the most flexable on price and at least if I get problems I can walk in and talk to somebody,
