yesterday my phone was working normally but i turned it off and the next time i turned it on it was certified. how likely is this to happen and could it have been orange?

It can be very likely to happen if your registry has for some reason

become corrupt. Windows will attempt to self repair as posted before dodgy xml

can also make this happen.

I had this problem last Friday. And what awarner said has reminded me that the last change I made to my phone was to apply midnight's registry tweaks. Certainly not blaming midnight, ;) I probably ballsed it up!!

Could this explain why I can't use the OTA decertification? I've tried all week to no avail!

You don't need to physically do anything to the registry, but like you said you had a

problem and did a soft boot to try and fix the problem.

That may well be where the error crept in.
