Guest 15 yr old Posted April 17, 2003 Report Posted April 17, 2003 Ok, under internet connection should i have orange csd wap to use the internet using wap?
Guest Monolithix [MVP] Posted April 17, 2003 Report Posted April 17, 2003 NBL All this info is available on the "GPRS/WAP settings repository" thread in the Articles forum
Guest awarner [MVP] Posted April 17, 2003 Report Posted April 17, 2003 yes, just use wap As I don't use wap so flame me if I'm wrong ;), I thought that it was only a limited version of the internet
Guest terminater2_uk Posted April 17, 2003 Report Posted April 17, 2003 i apologise if i'm wrong but i was under the impression that i was using wap only. i have a genie(o2)account that gives me unlimited free wap but there is no gprs. yet i can access all internet sites which show up exactly the same as when i put my orange sim in and use gprs. i just assumed that this was wap on the spv, however it seems not by what i'm reading. but if not, then how am i getting full internet access when i dont have gprs and my phone is set up for wap access only?
Guest rocknsock2k Posted April 18, 2003 Report Posted April 18, 2003 dont moan if ur not paying for it;)
Guest martin Posted April 18, 2003 Report Posted April 18, 2003 Standard internet pages are HTML and WAP pages are WML. Internet sites designed using the WML (Wireless Markup Language) are minus the 'bells & whistles' and made Internet access tolerable on a GSM 9.6K data rate channel. When you have downloaded an internet page, you can go to properties and check Type. On Orange GPRS :WML sites use orangewap and HTML uses orange internet. These are two different GPRS services and it is possible that they could have different charges set. (GPRS WAP is reported to be free with PAYG O2, and others - I think) You say that you can access ALL internet sites on WAP and that you don't have GPRS. I think we'll all want some of that. When you make an Internet connection, take a look at the top right where the signal bars are. If you have two arrows then you are using WAP over GSM and if have the letter G then you are using either WAP over GPRS or Internet over GPRS. Goto Internet Explorer connections and de-tick auto settings and change to 'select network=WAP network' and then try and connect to both HTML and WML sites.
Guest simon11 Posted April 18, 2003 Report Posted April 18, 2003 I can't understand why all this has to be done. I would have thought if you bought a wap phone you should just press a button for wap connection. What dose anybody do who is not on the internet? I don't think I will ever use wap as it is too much ****ing about. I contacted Orange sometime ago to say that I couldn't load a wap download to my phone. They didn't tell me that you have to do all this first. No wonder it didn't work. This is all very good for passing time and fiddling with the phone. But for anybody who just wants to use it. F***!!!
Guest martin Posted April 18, 2003 Report Posted April 18, 2003 If you were to be charged for GPRS on a 'per MB' basis, then you may not want to be charged for downloading a load of sounds, graphics etc if you only want to read a news update. WAP sites are becoming a little outdated now BUT the download costs for GPRS WAP would be low as the sites are composed of mainly text. Also some people have unlimited WAP access on O2. If Orange keeps the existing GPRS tarrifs then I'd prefer SPV optimised HTML sites. Keep em comming. IF GPRS tarrifs change, then I wouldn't do any harm to add a few WAP sites to your list.
Guest terminater2_uk Posted April 18, 2003 Report Posted April 18, 2003 just to confirm, i dont get the g icon when i connect, just the two arrows for wap. but i dont see any difference between the two when i connect, so i'm happy ;) just checked and my pages are html
Guest martin Posted April 18, 2003 Report Posted April 18, 2003 So you don't use the O2 GPRS network. Sounds like your using a 9.6k GSM channel for all Internet connections (both HTML and WML sites). No problems there. ;) What is HTML download speeds like? Orange have 28.8k GSM HSCSD for Internet access but I haven't tried it yet. Is it that O2 Internet access is free but you pay for the GSM call ? (bit like using a free ISP but you pay the landline connection) Is the SIM a contract or pre-pay and what is Genie? How do you check the costs incurred say over a few days ? What are you data settings for Internet connection and WAP connection? Do they both point to O2 CSD ? I've got a standard O2 pre-pay SIM but I've poor service in my house. I've only tried connecting to WAP via GPRS. I might try and see what happens via CSD. Cheers!
Guest terminater2_uk Posted April 18, 2003 Report Posted April 18, 2003 i'm on o2 contract. genie is the old name for o2 i can check my daily usage online and can confirm that it states i'm using wap and not getting charged. below are my settings Ok, go to programs---settings---data connections---menu---edit connections---1.dial up connections---menu---add. Then put the folling in each section Description: O2 Wap Connects to: The Internet Country code:44 Dialling Code:7712 Phone Number:927927 User name: o2wap Password: password (all lowercase) and leave Domain blank Then click on done. Now go to back to the data connection screen and change the option to the following, Internet connection:O2 Wap (or what ever you named your new setup) Work Connection: Automatic WAP Connection: O2 Wap (or what ever you named your new set up) Secure WAP: none available Now go back to the start screen and go to programs---Internet explorer. then click on menu and go to options. Next, go to select network and change it to The Internet Click done
Guest martin Posted April 18, 2003 Report Posted April 18, 2003 Would ya believe it. I've put my O2 pre-pay sim in my SPV and proved your absolutely right. What was confusing was the term FREE WAP. First I suprised to find it free on a GSM timeslot (not WAP over GPRS) and secondly that the WAP data connection was not limited to WML pages. WAP has quite a strong association with WML pages, even today. With the dial up connection, you are given a free GSM 9.6K data connection to do whatever you like. If someone buys themselves a second hand SPV and O2 pre-pay SIM - they're laughing. I have been connected on the web via the O2 dial up connection up until my battery ran out, accessing ALL (HTML & WML) internet sites and even backed up my Orange phone through it. I checked my pre-pay account and I haven't used a penny.
