Why does update prolong battery life?

I have had my SPV since Christmas and have previously been appauled at the short time the battery charge lasts but recently I updated the software and I'm amazed how much longer it lasts now. How does it do this? I know there is now only one button which lights up the screen when the keypad is locked. Is this the only difference?

The battery goes into 'sleep' mode after a bit, that saves a lot.. Also I think the background processes no longer churn up as much cpu usage..
