Only at Oranges discretion.

The SPV hardware is capable of it, but its the telcos' call to implement it.

So what do you think?

Will orange do it?

Has someone (maybe Paul) got some insider infos on the likelyhood of this

happening?

I don't think they will, no.

Release free software, or release brand new handsets running the latest vresion just as people contracts are beginning to expire (12 months after the SPV is launched)

Why bother when you can get a ~much~ better handset for a similar price? (You missed playing with the 200mhz Xscale handsets at the meet Richie, they flew!)

xscale would mean though that current applications would have to be

changed and therefore possibly bought again, right?

Also I wonder if there will ever be any variation in screen size for MS

smartphones (don't think so though).

errr, shouldnt need to be changes, xscale is pretty compatible with ARM

and no, there wont be any variation in screen sizes, at least for the foreseen future, its part of the microsoft design doc (kind of like how all pocketpc screens are the same size)

Just thought so, as in the world of pocket pcs there is many apps that are

available for different platforms in different version e.g. application.arm.cab,

etc.

Thought so. And we wouldn't want bigger screens by bigger pixels, would we.

Anyway, there's alway PocketPC-Phone-edition devices for people who want

bigger screens, and smaller screens would make no sense IMHO.

The Phones at the meet were running the same OS apps etc,

and the intel referance design actually looked quite good

apart from the roller. but it was quoted as a being designed

as a business phone and not for games ;)

Anyone actually tried asking Orange if they will offer the upgrade?

mono has hit the nail on the head. by the time we see ozone (with bvluetooth support) it will be september, then the networks will wanna test it for a couple of months, so thats november and by that time wouldnt you rather have a new phone with at least a 200mhz processor? i know i would

oh, and i say the version with bluetooth support, but there may well be a version of ozone released before then, which would be fine for the spv as it doesnt have bluetooth anyways

A Bluetooth solution is being released for the SPV very soon.

As for the new spv, 'O' do not have any dates yet. So there is no point in all this guessing.

I will keep an eye out at work and post as soon as I hear of a new SPV.

who said anything about new SPV by the way  my comments about ozone phones are for other phones not necessarily connected with O such as mitac/asus etc.

the september release date is for bluetooth anabled version of Ozone mentioned on the microsoft website ;)

And a battery life half of what we've got now!

As for O releasing a new version of the SPV, this article states a new version will be out with integrated camera and OZONE by September.

Whether or not this is Gospel, who knows?!?!? But I bet the O tech support staff are the last to know though

Anyone noticed that the photo in this article http://msmobiles.com/article.php/27.html refers to Smartphone 2002, PPC Ozone, and "SP v.Next" which i guess is the SPV version of Ozone. Or is it?

Much as i love the SPV form, microsoft needs to get its act together bug/userbility wise to give SPV+ a decent chance, so lets hope that SP2003/4 "works"!

Cute technology is nothing when you compare 70,000 to 117 million+ units for Nokia.

And if anyone from microsoft reads this, I'll beta-test for you!

On the Microsoft site, it implies we could have updates for our phones early in October, or at least details about their existence.

I've been playing with the 2k3 emulator and dev environment for most of today. No VS.NET though, need to get hold of a copy so i can try out some of the new CF stuff....

Well, asuming that Orange has a will launch a 2003 only device. They might launch SPV2 before 2003 and then what? Should they then wait until a new device was ready or start making extra money out of the devices they already sold? ... But if 2003 comes with SPV2, well, then it might be more profitable for them to not release an update ... I guess it depends on wether Orange wants happy costumers or not ... ... Go figure!

C'mon guys, who are you kidding here? SPV2 isn't going to appear anytime soon. Look at the track record... E100 announced February, due April, here mid-July?

And commercially, where's the sense? The E100 is still the new kid on the block, a much better phone than the SPV, and it deserves its turn in the limelight.

SPV2/Xscale phone December earliest!
