Guest TSCRYPTO Posted April 19, 2003 Report Posted April 19, 2003 This is probably a dumb-a s s question, but, please humour me... ;) See below - why in this XML file (Brushed Metal Home Screen) are there multiple references to 'lang' for what seem to be essentially the same thing (ie title and SMS counter)? Are all these refs necessary? Cheers Brushed metal Brushed metal Brushed metal Brushed metal Brushed metal Brushed metal Brushed metal Brushed metal And so on for other plug-ins such as email
Guest Richie M Posted April 19, 2003 Report Posted April 19, 2003 No they are not necessary ;) If you leave out the "lang" it'll just display what you put no what language the phone is set to :) eg if you just put Brushed metal it'll use "Brushed metal" for all languages. (it's the same for all plug-ins) If want a working example just look at any of my homescreens XML :D
Guest TSCRYPTO Posted April 19, 2003 Report Posted April 19, 2003 Thanks Richie - indeed I have been a user of the XP homscreen for a few weeks now. ;) If these refs aren't necessary, why did the author use them? Do the indicate the option to use languages other than english? What do the references actually represent?
Guest midnight Posted April 19, 2003 Report Posted April 19, 2003 its a way of picking out the language so that any text you write in the homescreen can automatically be written in the correct language.
Guest Richie M Posted April 19, 2003 Report Posted April 19, 2003 If these refs aren't necessary, why did the author use them?Dunno, looks awfull, thats why i don't bother ;) Do the indicate the option to use languages other than english? What do the references actually represent? Hex value for the language. Values are: 0x0409: English (U.S.) 0x040c: French 0x0809: English (U.K.) 0x0407: German 0x0410: Italian 0x0816: Portuguese (Portugal) 0x040a: Spanish PS a new version of my Longhorn Homescreen is coming very soon ;) And it's gonna be very special :) Maybe time for you to "upgrade" your OS :D
Guest TSCRYPTO Posted April 19, 2003 Report Posted April 19, 2003 Yeah, I certainly didnt mind the look of the first Longhorn screen - very nice indeed. The primary reason for sticking with the XP homescreen was that I had just got a new PC and I thought it kinda groovy to have a homescreen on the phone that matched that on the PC... (I should get out more really, shouldn't I...) ;)

(I should get out more really, shouldn't I...) ;) Nah m8, thats why I did it - i think it's got more of the look and feel of Windows compared to the other XP type themes out :) I did the Longhorn one for a couple of reason; I like the look & i wanted to do it before anyone else did ;) (I may do an update to the XP, on lines of the upcoming Longhorn version :D but i'm not telling you what it is yet, someone else might overhear :))
Guest drblow Posted April 19, 2003 Report Posted April 19, 2003 is it possible to preview home screen xml files on the sdk emulator? i've been mucking about with them, just editing in notepad, but have to just activesync xml files into the phone & apply them as layout to see the results. this is very time consuming & irritating! any help from the gurus??
Guest Richie M Posted April 19, 2003 Report Posted April 19, 2003 drblow - it is possible - but i've never got it to work - and it's alot of hassle; you have to compile your homescreen to run through the emulator - it's not a case of drag and drop :) If you find putting the xml on the phone to demo it "very time consuming & irritating" you'll find using the emulator even worse ;) Sorry
Guest drblow Posted April 19, 2003 Report Posted April 19, 2003 So how do you guys preview your work?? Do you just load onto the phone the way I do?
Guest Richie M Posted April 19, 2003 Report Posted April 19, 2003 Yep  'fraid so - wish i had a pound for everytime i'd loaded a xML ;)
Guest drblow Posted April 19, 2003 Report Posted April 19, 2003 ARSE! Still, that fact has just made all you skin gurus seem like gods in my humble eyes!! The little messing I have been doing has just been too annoying to actually stick with it and see any project through! So to actually finish one of these beauties from scratch is a work of genius I reckon!! Keep up the good work you boys! (coz I couldn't be arsed with it!!)
Guest midnight Posted April 19, 2003 Report Posted April 19, 2003 of course the benefit of the emulator is you dont reset your phone if you mess something up
