Anyone else into, or has every been into these little beauties?

About 12 years ago i was into these be could never afford to buy very much so about 4-5 years ago me and the guys at work decide to get back into it! Between us we must of bought 12-14 cars (electric and petrol) and raced them around after work in the rear car park.. Good summer fun.

we then bought a plane!!! Witch last exactly 1 hour after it had been built. Seams that the controls were wired back to front so when my mate pulled hard back to try and save the poor thing from hitting the ground......well.. it just started to dive and buried itself..

....so we went back to cars for a couple of days.....

Then I bought a helicopter, only a beginner one but i bought it brand new so i could go through the process of building it and understanding the workings....a couple of days later and it was built and took it to work!! WOW! Everyone loved it and it looked really impressive. at the end of the day a mate and myself thought we would run it in. now, I don’t know if you have ever run in small petrol cars but you are supposed to run the engine on tick-over for about 3-4 tanks of fuel, with helicopters on the other hand you are supposed to run them at MAX revs for 3-4 tanks of fuel! very dangerous in you mums back garden! so we got some planks of wood and some bricks and put these on the helicopters 'stands' to hold it down and started it up... rev rev it starts first time and I turn the fuel intake up a little and stand back as the blades start to turn....slowly faster and faster until I reach MAX revs! by now the thing is screaming and we have retreated a further 10 meters or so down the garden. Seems quite happy by now and we leave it alone for the first fuel tank….. it runs out and I go through the process of filling it up, starting it up and reving it up to MAX revs again….seems quite happy so we leave it alone again…. By this time though it was vibrating a fair bit and the bricks were starting to move, also about this time my mate picks up the controller and says something like ‘I cant wait to have ago flying this’ and pushing both stick up!!!! AAARRRRRHHHHH! I shout as the thing flips right over and destroys itself while attacking a nearby garden bench. Gutted! But he did fix it for me and I sold it two weeks later before I did something similar to it again!

Now, I fancy getting back into it again, anyone else had any experience?

I've got a trick Kyosho Ultima here, fully hand wound motor, kevlar belts, shox that are little works of CMC-machine art. And a 5 minute battery lif at the best of times. My little bro's into the petrol cars but then you need serious space to use them. Bloody good laugh tho'

If i ever get round to it i'd love to build an RC petrol car. What sort of prices are you looking at nowadays for the car/engine/RC kit?

i had a modified tamiya hotshot2, could get around 50mph out of it, great fun and could jump for miles.

and looks a little something like this.

cars start at jus under 200 notes and new helicopters are around 600-700 notes. helicopters you should buy second hand because they loose there value very fast! stick with cars... as you will need months to learn to fly a helicopter and you will have to get an instructor!

There was this report in the Metro recently about a 13 year old girl who got hit by a R/C plane and died..

It was a freak accident.. no one's fault.. But it is really sad.. such thing can happen.

Who says remote control helicopters cost £600?

try here May not as good as a petrol full function one, but less likely to tear itself apart methinks ;)

I was talking about 'proper' petrol ones. anyone tried those electric ones?

A friend of mine has several RC planes, and even a jet engined one. Runs out of fuel in abount a minute and it's so hard to fly as you can only see it for a couple of seconds before it's out of sight again. Good laugh though.

Doesn't have a copter ;)

WOW! I have seen those jet plane engines for about a grand.. They look great fun but very dangerous!

Extremely dangerous. One day the autopilot locked and the plane shot off. Found it 12 miles away - luckily in a field and not too badly damaged. The thing can go at about 250 mph so it would have been leathal if it hit someone.
