Am I making a meal of it?

Been trying to decert my phone using the PC at work (Windows 98 on a NT Network).

I've read the instructions and have understood them all. The problem I am having - apart from taking about 10 goes to get to the white bootloader erase screen - is that when I have done this, and waited for the blue screen to appear before putting the phone in the cradle, I am obviously not fast enough in copying the edited mxip_oem.....etc file back to the phone before it is begging me to put in my password.

The result is that the phone is not de-certified.

Now then.... at that point I have lost from the phone all my contacts (no bother as I have got them on Outlook) and any skins/sounds I have added but how can I tell if the update has worked? Presumably by copying back the "new" mxip_oem....etc file from the phone to the PC and re-looking. I will then have to reload all my cab files from scratch. This involves reinstalling AllExplorer first with all the re-registration process, presumably before I can install, say SmartExplorer. Pain. At least, that is what I have been doing. Hence the question if I am making a meal of it.

So, main questions.....

(1)......Easy way to tell if it has been successful, please, rather than finding the first time I try to install Tetris it fails.

(2)......Why can't I power the phone on after the Erasing process with it in the cradle rather than waiting for the blue screen

(3).......Is using Windows 98 and/or a network likely to be a factor and

(4).......Can I use a SPV USB cable (as recommended on the Forum) instead of the cradle?

Once again, many thanks for the help.

(1) have you changed the internet favourites ?

not sure about the answers to the rest

(1)... get the registry editor app (or something similar that is a single exe) then it's just copy one file and run it to see if it's locked. Before the UK Update we were changing a IE favourite, I heard these might be gone in the updated provxml?

(2) If the phone is in too early it seems to sometimes take longer to connect to activesync. In fact you could play with cradling it after a slow count of 3 from the blue screen first appearing to improve success...

(3) Different windows may well effect activesyncs behaviour... I've only done it on 2K. You have the file windows open and everything ready for activesync to come online? Your just going for copying the files and ignoring anything else activesync might say like partnerships?

(4) dunno... haven't tried, can't see why not...

*EDIT* Doh Spacemonkey beat me (Damn that Pinky :)).

4) I used a USB Cable no probs (Cradle at home, Cable at work ;))

Spacemonkey.

(3) Yes. Unfortunately, Activesync seems to get to its question before my Ctr/V or Paste works.

Do I also take it that if it fails, it's back to square 1 again?

Yeah, activesync brings up it's question... what I meant was ignore it's question. The paste (you can cut before you start) should still work even if activesync is off talking about partnerships somewhere else.

Yes, if it fails, it's hard reset and try again... can be frustrating, it's just a case of getting the nack. Is activesync coming active before the pin screen comes up? Like the activesync symbol in your tray on the pc going green?

I think that the pin screen may be winning by a short head at present, but I'm too busy watching the damned Windows explorer and trying to get the paste option!!!!!!!!!

You would think that there would be a less tortuous route to this. Even the legitimate roue to get to the Erase relies on the reactions of a Grand Prix driver.

Go to www.monolithix.org

It has a nice little app that sits on your pc repeatedly trying to copy the provxml so that you don't have to...

Thanks.

Now that app of Mono's doesn't require the phone to be de-certified does it? Because if it does, please go to the beginning of this thread..............

No, the app is for decertifying... it runs on your pc and does the copy provxml operation so you don't have to keep trying to paste.

The other thing is, after it's got the new file on and the phones booted up, leave it alone for 5 minutes, it can sometimes take a little time for everything to finish processing and settle down.

Done it!

Many thanks to Mono's de-certification program. (remember to tick the loop box).

For info

1....The USB cable works in place of the cradle.

2.....No problems with Windows 98

You do have to persevere though.

Cool : glad you've got it working. I also decerted my phone on a win98 computer on a novel network. (although before the update using the old fashioned way)

The app was made by Will not mono, but mono

is kind enough to host the app on his site for evryone to use.

Team work :)
