Guest ben.peacock Posted March 12, 2003 Report Posted March 12, 2003 When the phone is put onto charge (phone turned off) the orange light comes on as normal but if I leave it to charge overnight and come to turn it on in the morning no charge light is on, not even the green light. I have to take it off the stand and put it back on charge to complete the other 6% or so charge it has to do. It has worked OK in the past but the last two charges overnight it seems to stop at about 96%. Could this be overheating. :?:
Guest Richie M Posted March 12, 2003 Report Posted March 12, 2003 Dunno m8, seems about right tho :? i think the most i've ever got mine to is 98% and that's when it turns charging off (i checked power level as soon as charging icon changed to full)
Guest fraser Posted March 12, 2003 Report Posted March 12, 2003 Yes. What you are doing is very bad for the battery. Here's an informational link on battery care. What you may have done is in the section "Stay cool". Just to recap for those at the back, don't charge your phone up, disconnect it, then recharge. The charging circuitry won't be able to detect when it is fully charged, and you may damage the cell. Also, don't worship the percentage number. It's only an estimate, it isn't used by the system that determines when to stop charging.
Guest Richie M Posted March 12, 2003 Report Posted March 12, 2003 But you arent meant to let the SPV go flat :?
Guest strathclydezero Posted March 12, 2003 Report Posted March 12, 2003 Keep reading down ... Lithium Ion (Li-Ion) Lithium Ion batteries are very different. You should not deliberately discharge a Li-Ion cell. In fact, if you were to manage to run one flat, it would probably be damaged. There is electronics inside each Li-Ion battery to protect it from such abuse, but don't take the risk! To keep your Li-Ion battery in good shape, simply charge it overnight before it runs down. If a full battery at all times matters to you, you can top it up whenever you like, but you'll probably get a longer service life from it if you only recharge it when it is getting a bit low.
Guest ajb3000 Posted March 12, 2003 Report Posted March 12, 2003 uurrmm.... I almost always wait for it to completely run out before recharging?!?
Guest HelloDave Posted March 12, 2003 Report Posted March 12, 2003 When you charge the SPV it doesn't constantly charge; as soon as the battery is full it will stop charging for a while, and then start again when the battery drops to a certain level (not sure what). If you take it off charge you may catch it at any point in this cycle, so if you unplug it just before it's about to start charging again the battery will appear to be not quite full. I think this is the reason the backlight comes on at random when the SPV is on external power - it lights up when the SPV switches from battery power to charging.
Guest xanadu Posted March 12, 2003 Report Posted March 12, 2003 seems to stop at about 96%. Could this be overheating. :?: Mine does the same, and other peoples also. This seems normal. If the battery isn't hot to touch then it isn't overheating, but the battery will become warm while charging, and this is normal. Lithium batteries can be regularly top up charged without any harm.
Guest Syvwlch Posted March 12, 2003 Report Posted March 12, 2003 There is little or no hysteresis with Lithium-Ion batteries. In otherwords, it is ok to NOT wait to discharge the battery before you charge it up again. They also age more slowly than previous technologies. Nevertheless, they do age and lose capacity over-time, and there is little reason to fixate on those percentile readings, as they are rarely well-calibrated and do not really represent battery life directly (a percent near full charge, another at mid charge, and those last percent you can never squeeze out of a dying battery don't represent the same talk time, for example).
Guest yatpeak Posted March 13, 2003 Report Posted March 13, 2003 When you charge the SPV it doesn't constantly charge; as soon as the battery is full it will stop charging for a while, and then start again when the battery drops to a certain level (not sure what). I think I read somewhere that this only works with the cradle, could anyone tell me whether or not this is true? Thanks, Wyatt
Guest ashley Posted March 13, 2003 Report Posted March 13, 2003 You can watch this by viewing battery level in all-explorer running and viewing battery level. It will cycle between 100 and 96%. That's why the light comes on seemingly at random. Ashley
Guest awarner [MVP] Posted March 13, 2003 Report Posted March 13, 2003 I think I read somewhere that this only works with the cradle, could anyone tell me whether or not this is true? Thanks, Wyatt Not true as the cradle does not control how the phone charges unless you do the usb power mod like me :) seriously the phone controls how it's charged nothing else.
Guest Prototype24 Posted March 14, 2003 Report Posted March 14, 2003 I took my SPV out my pocket and none of the buttons would work. The LED was flashing normally but I got no response from any key so I was forced to take the battery off, After putting it back and turning the phone on I got a message about the "Main Battery" being very low. Since then the phone doesen't seem to charge; I left it on the charger (off) for a couple of hours and when I turned it back on it gave me the same message about "low battery" I've left it charging while on & off but it's not charging; the battery meter is right at the end!! Help!! Sorry I've posted this in the wrong place...move to Help section
