Guest hunkymouse Posted April 23, 2003 Report Posted April 23, 2003 I've - finally! successfully got the SPV working as a USB modem. Full details of the whole horrible saga can be found at http://tinyurl.com/a58k and now I have a new problem, because a friend wants to do this, but using Windows 98. I did it using Windows XP. Has anybody done the trick with W98, and were there any obvious "gotcha!" points to avoid? "Hank Maus"
Guest pete1312 Posted April 23, 2003 Report Posted April 23, 2003 I don't think it is possible with Win 98, SE or ME
Guest awarner [MVP] Posted April 23, 2003 Report Posted April 23, 2003 You can only use XP or 2000 ;)
Guest NickB&SPV Posted April 23, 2003 Report Posted April 23, 2003 I would be eternally grateful if someone could sort this problem out.
Guest awarner [MVP] Posted April 23, 2003 Report Posted April 23, 2003 Sorry but OrangeMS are not interested in doing it ;)
Guest PhilA Posted April 23, 2003 Report Posted April 23, 2003 I can't make any promises on this, because I don't have a Win9x machine to test on, but having read through the modem inf file, it appears that the only driver it needs is USBSer.sys (USB Modem Driver). I think part of the problem could be that USBSer.sys is not installed by default into the driver directory on Win9x, and the inf file doesn't give the information required to get it off the installation CD, making the assumption it's already available. There could therefore be two possible courses of action: 1) Install drivers for another USB modem, which will possibly install the required usbser.sys driver onto your system, and let the HTC inf file work properly 2) I found the following link on the net: http://www.usb-drivers.com/drivers/63/63237.htm This is a link through to driverguide.com (you have to register to get the file, but it's free), where all the required USB drivers for ME (and which will probably work on 9x) are in a single zip file you can extract straight to your machine As I said, I have absolutely no idea if this will work, because I can't test it, but if anyone wants to give it a try then please do (just don't shout at me if you screw your machine up ;) )
Guest pete1312 Posted April 24, 2003 Report Posted April 24, 2003 Thanks for the advice PhilA, but in my case it came about a month too late as I've since upgraded my OS from ME to XP Pro on my Desktop & Laptop (not a small expense - especially all the extra associated hassle)! I can no longer test your suggestion myself, but I'm sure lots of other folks on 98 etc would be very interested. Hope it works for you.
