Guest g7rqa Posted April 23, 2003 Report Posted April 23, 2003 so i called O and ranted about the extortionate gprs charges... i wanted to dial to the internet & not use gprs they said that standard ISP's normaly use 0845 numbers..which are not included in my "talk 60" package so it would be expensive.... BUT i have a server @ home connected to broadband! so the plan is: connect a modem to my server configure remote access. use my spv to dial into my server then straight out via broadband! so far i can dial-in...but cant get pocket explorer to "point" at my server... any ideas guys?? steve
Guest cyrilthefish Posted April 23, 2003 Report Posted April 23, 2003 have you tried setting the DNS server addresses on your phone to point to your ISP's? and is your server giving out a correct IP address to your phone? i might have a go at that myself if i can find my old modem, i also have a server PC and broadband ;)
Guest g7rqa Posted April 23, 2003 Report Posted April 23, 2003 good point! hadnt thought of that... i'm using my server as a dns forwarder... so i'll point my dns @ that!
Guest ivanmacx Posted April 23, 2003 Report Posted April 23, 2003 That's a cracking idea. What speed would the SPV achieve over a dial up connection? Are we back to 9kbps (not that I get much more than that over GPRS anyway)?
Guest arunhallan Posted April 23, 2003 Report Posted April 23, 2003 could someone explain how to do this step by step - maybe it could go in articles?
Guest Bacon Posted April 23, 2003 Report Posted April 23, 2003 I think that this has been tried before. Unfortunately, the call is flagged up as a data call not a voice call on the network, so you may well be charged data call rates. Might be worth checking.
Guest ajb3000 Posted April 23, 2003 Report Posted April 23, 2003 Data calls over CSD run at 9.6kbps, and are charged at the same rate as voice calls (with the exception of freephone numbers where data calls are charged at your standard rate)
Guest Gorskar Posted April 24, 2003 Report Posted April 24, 2003 Why bother with all that work (and tieing up your home phone line) - many ISPs have an international dialup number which is just a standard geographic number. For example you could get a BTOpenworld Pay-as-you-go account, and use the International number, ie: "International PSTN 00 44 121 478 9200" - I used to use this back in the old days with ED50 quite successfully. (although ed50 included 0845 numbers, this is better cause its still 1p/min after your 50mins run out)
