get a full song and edit it so that it took up less memory then use it as a ringtone (post on here) would that be infringement of copywrite or any other legal stuff?

I believe, that you are allowed to distribute about 30 seconds of a song for public listening anyway 30 seconds is the maximum you can have as a ringtone, as the Orange Answerphone kicks in before then, so it is pointless having the whole song..

Please correct me if i am wrong

Use CoolEdit or Nero Wave Editor to crop the file as you need, they also analyse it for frequency and give you a graphic sound 'spectrum' (couldn't find a different word for that). Then you can play with it in any way + filters, plugins, FX etc.. Nero accepts MP3 so does CE if I remember correctly...

I use soundforge as it's pro sound editing software (I'm a composer) - and it's array of plugin directX effects/processing is unsurpassed.

I think Cooledit is more user friendly if you are not used to waveform editing (dunno tho coz I don't use it!).

Just make sure that when you are creating a loop, that you have start & end points meeting at 0db (graphically, this is the centre line which runs down any waveform image - 0db = silence). Otherwise you will get pops/clicks appearing at loop point. There is no hard & fast rule about where to loop your sounds - just use your ears!

Also try to keep your sounds peaking at or below -6db - this will reduce the chance of distortion. If you can add effects etc - I recommend using a parametric equaliser to 'reduce low rumble' - as too much bass frequency can add distorion on the phone even tho you can't hear it on your pc!

Save your .wav as 44.100 Hz, 16 bit mono - that will reduce the size a bit without losing sound quality.

ricmoo2003 is correct in saying that you can use 30 secs of any piece of music you like - I regularly seek sample clearance from recording companies etc. who are usually happy to make deals with people using over 30 secs, but under this length it's just not woth them bothering about!

Yeah, but if you do not have sound forge. You can trim down .wav files with sound recorder using the 'delete after this time function'. I've got sound forge now but I started this way. Also there is a freeware program called Audacity that is like a less versatile version of sound forge. I think i got it from download.com The effects on it are quality flange, wah wah, phaser!!!!

Downloaded Cool Edit 2000 and have done one already, Spaceman by Babylon Zoo, (mainly cus it was easy  ). It wont let me upload it tho :? , says "The Extension wav is not allowed" ;) . If someone can tell me how to get around this then i'll be happy to put it up so you can hear it and tell me what you think.

hmm, tried it on the phone, bit quiet aswell, sometimes its better to grab a loop from the center of a song instead of the beginning.
