Guest goose Posted April 26, 2003 Report Posted April 26, 2003 Now into my 4th day as an SPV owner and just about everything is better than I had expected... apart from the actual PHONE functionality! Overall I still think it rocks as a handset, but I have found its most basic and important features lacking a little... not sure if anybody else has come across these following points: 1. The signal reception is decidedly worse than my previous handset (SL45) in the same places - home office for one is very important and I find the signal at 1 bar constantly ;) 2. Probably still to do with signal reception, but sometimes it takes me up to 5 or 6 times to phone somebody, I make plenty of 0 second calls or sometimes just get a kind of medium/high-pitched sound instead of the ringing tone? Are these common problems or is it just me? I shouldn't think any kind of fix will sort out the signal problem, but if there is I'd love to know! cheers, gus
Guest mike-oh Posted April 26, 2003 Report Posted April 26, 2003 Do you know if you have the latest update installed. This improved the reception (somehow) by about 1-2bars for most people! Go to settings then about and check the following ROM update versions: Operator: 1.3.5.6 Manufacturer: 1.3.5.6 Microsoft: 3.0.12255.0 (don't think this has ever changed) Language:1.3.5.6 File System: 3.0.12255.0 If your values are smaller than the above eg Operator: 1.0.0.2 or something like that you need to download the update of the orange website. But since you've just bought your phone these should all be up to date anyhow.
Guest goose Posted April 26, 2003 Report Posted April 26, 2003 unfortunately I have the latest update - just double-checked ;)
Guest mike-oh Posted April 26, 2003 Report Posted April 26, 2003 Am i to understand that your sl45 was on orange?
Guest martin Posted April 26, 2003 Report Posted April 26, 2003 It sounds like there may be a fault on the network. Do you have the other phone to try. If you continue to fail call setups and have very poor speech quality with the other phone, then the network may be running bit errors and I would raise this with the network operator. You say that you have a poor receive signal, but to be honest, if you don't have the problem with the SL45 then you shouldn't have it with the SPV. In theory.
Guest goose Posted April 26, 2003 Report Posted April 26, 2003 ok, sorry, should have specified, it was actually an SL42e on Orange. I just said SL45 as I'm used to calling it that since I had it all upgraded and when shopping around for accessories searching for SL45 returns more results. cheers, gus
Guest goose Posted April 26, 2003 Report Posted April 26, 2003 @martin - It's definitely not a network fault as my SL42e & my girlfriend's 5210e BOTH have near-full reception (all on Orange) in exactly the same place. I am 100% sure that it is an SPV problem, but if nobody else has this issue it _could_ be my particular handset? - although I did find another post about it, and it was listed in some posts where people ranted about how much they hated the SPV. Just hoping in vain that there is some tweak that improves signal reception! (not with some daft wee aluminium 'signal booster' though! ;)) Any ideas?
Guest martin Posted April 26, 2003 Report Posted April 26, 2003 Probably still to do with signal reception, but sometimes it takes me up to 5 or 6 times to phone somebody, I make plenty of 0 second calls or sometimes just get a kind of medium/high-pitched sound instead of the ringing tone? This should definately not be happening - simple as that. I personally think people go on too much about the bars on their phone, I'm not even sure if there are standard bands for the RX level indicator. Although due to signal fluctuation I would say 1 bar may cause problems, especially with data calls. Even with 1 bar you are above the minimum RX level for network access and you should be AT LEAST be able to setup a call and if not then the signalling messages are being corrupted or lost on the network. Does anybody remember the Network Monitor that you could setup on the Nokia phones using LogoManager. Now thats a different story altogether. You could have fun with customer services with that one.
