Why do some phone companies, like Orange, use the little "tape" icon to show that you have voicemail waiting and some like T-Mobile in the US only send an SMS message to alert you of the VoiceMail???

Is this on the same phone?

Not sure about the USA, but here in the UK we have the same thing across all operators - an alert, then an icon... (not an SMS as such.)

Good question... I have T-Mobile in the US and they send an SMS, which is annoying... I would prefer just an icon... when I get a message it gives me an SMS so I have to view it to clear the unanswered SMS and it also gives me a missed call so I have to view that to clear the unanswered missed call.

Firaaz:

T-Mobile or VoiceStream has never used the icon in my area as far as I know. Even when I had a Handspring Treo, T68m, or TMobilePPC, the icon did not show up, only an sms that read:

From 123, "You have 1 new voice message".

But Sprint and ATT users received the icon when the have voicemail on the same exact types of Phones.

T-Mobile users in some areas of the US receive the voicemail symbol. But I think they are actually on shared GSM networks with Cingular or ATT.

I hate that! It seems minor but I really wish I had that icon sitting on the top of my screen, reminding me there is a voicemail waiting, instead of an sms buried in the rest of my messages.

Yeah, Vodafone has the same rubbish system. My girlfriends work phone used to ring her back if she cancelled a call and someone left a message (if she cancelled the original call, why on earth would she answer the notification call?). She has changed this so it now notifies her with an SMS, but this still gets sent every few minutes.

Orange's answerphone icon is sooo much nicer!
